Snorkeling and things to see in Curacao

We are on a cruise in November and will be in Curacao from 8am - 5pm and would like to do snorkeling and site seeing. What do you recommend, who do you suggest we book with and what is the best way to travel around island?

Hi Peter,

I'd check out www.nationalcuracao.com for a car rental at one of the locations and book for the day. That way you can see the island, stop at whatever beaches you like and relax, if you choose.

We stayed at the Marriott and their National desk was friendly, professional and the car immaculate. If you want to have the advantage of being able to come back to a nice resort for a drink, snack, swim, or whatever, you'd definitely enjoy it there.

As well, the snorkeling right from the beach was very good.

While the snorkeling just off the Marriott is o'k the West End beach coves 25-35 minutes west are 10X as good. You can visit 2-3 cove beaches and enjoy 3 hours of excellent snorkeling along the boulders that form the coves.
Don't hestitate to go around the cove if you get a floatation blow-up, just in case you are concerned going outside the coves. It was lovely in May 2004. We are returning in Jan.2006 (staying on the East End at the SeaAqarium Resort and expect the underwater sights to be as good or better than our last visit. It should be better now that we know our way around. If you rent a car at the Marriott it is worth 2 one day visits and we are avid snorler's and skin divers.

If you are just going to be there for the day, I'd spend it sightseeing, since Curacao is a very interesting place and different from most other islands. Take a tour of the town (the Punda side of the harbor.) It has some fascinating architecture and history. You can go to the tourist information booth at the harborside, and they'll hook you up with a group tour. Also be sure to take in the Kura Hulanda museum on the Otrobanda side, which has an excellent collection detailing the history of the slave trade. For good snorkeling, you will have to go all the way out to the west end, about a 35-40 minute drive from town. Sunset Waters Resort has the best house reef, easily reachable from shore, and for a small fee, you can rent snorkeling gear right on the beach.
