Favorite Places to stay in Slovenia

Does anyone have any favorite places to stay in Slovenia? We usually prefer smaller inns or B&B's. Any suggestions for favorite places to eat, too?

What exactly did you have in mind? City? (Ljubliana?) Lakes? (Bled?) Sea? (Piran?) Caves? There is so much to see. I spent time in Bled and enjoyed it very much. Lots of charming small places to stay as well as big hotels.

GMT2272 - We are going to Slovenia for two weeks at the end of September. When are you going? If you like, email me at [email protected] and we can compare research. Judging by the slim pickings of info available here, I'll have to keep detailed notes and do a trip report this time

Did you see my web site info in this thread: http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessa...mp;keyword=152

In Ljubljana we stayed at the Park hotel. Fairly basic, but fine. The nicest hotel in town in the Grand Union. Stay away from the Holiday Inn. It's really ugly.

In Piran/Portoroz we were lucky to find a room in early Sept. We were planning on staying two nights but could only get a room for one (don't remember where) so we went to Nova Gorica early and spent one night there at one of the two hotel/casinos there.

In Triglav National Park we stayed at Zlatorog.

We did day trips to Skofja Loka and Ptuj from Ljublana, and to Bled from Triglav/Lake Bohinj so we didn't need hotels there.

Hope this was somewhat helpful.

The Slovenian tourist office has an excellent website you should check out with tons of info and a message board/guest book.

Hi there,
I have been delinquent in posting a reply!
Here are some of my recommendations:
Pristave Lepena in the Soca River Valley comes highly recommended by my friends. I have been dying to go. It is very beautiful and a bit remote.

You must book early.

Also, here is another website that you can check out (if you haven't already!).
http://www.slovenia-tourism.si/?podezelje_1=0

This site has a ton of the tourist farms and some of them look very charming. Also, many of the gostilnas (country restaurants) have rooms available. Other suggestions:

Hotel Hvala in Bovec
In Ljubljana, the smaller inns and B&Bs are outside the city so a car would be recommended. In Ljubljana, Hotel Slon and Grand Union are both fine. The Holiday Inn is now part of the Grand Union. It is ugly from the outside but the rooms are nicer (at least they were).

Good luck,
Jan from Ljubljana

Any suggestions for small family-run places? Pristava Lepena looks great, but is out of my price range. How hard is it to go without reservations and just find B&B's in the countryside? Has anyone else had a hard time getting a response to e-mail accomodation requests for Slovenia?

We were in Bled for about 5 days this past June/July and loved it! Domen from 3glav adventures (http://www.3glav-adventures.com/) arranged our accommodations for us - he did an excellent job and I cannot say enough good things about him. Our 1 bedroom centrally located apartment was 50 euros per night. The living room sofa made into a bed as well. You may want to check out his web site.

We spent 3 nights in Lake Bled and 3 in Ljubljana at the end of August 06. Really enjoyed Lake Bled. We stayed in the Hotel Vila Bojana. Cost was 90 euro per night (included breakfast) This was a bit dearer than we wanted but was really nice accommodation. We spent the days walking, hiring bikes and riding out into the country villages, going to Vintgar Gorge. There are a number of places to eat, some being on the lake which we found were all good. Bled is certainly a very special area. In Ljubljana we stayed in the Hotel Emonec (70 euro including breakfast) we had a renovated room, clean, good location, good breakfast. We caught the local bus from Ljubljana to Postojna caves for the day which we really enjoyed. Ljubljana has a great atmosphere. Sorry we cant comment on any more as we then caught the train down into Croatia where we spent 3 weeks. If the rest of Slovenia compares with what we experienced you will not be disappointed.

If you'll spend time in Ljublajana (and it's worthwhile to do so!), consider booking ahead - the city still has limited hotel space and fills up often on the weekends for conferences and such. If you do need to choose a Ljubljana hotel, the Slon is a reliable one, and can often be booked at a discount online. If you'll stay over a Friday and/or Saturday night, ask for a room away from the street if you can, as weekend morning (as in 2 AM ) street traffic can be noisy!
