Airlines that allow dogs in cabin??
Does anyone know of any airlines that allow dogs in the cabin? We have a 12 lb. dog that we'd love to take on a trip w/ us, but would never put her in cargo!

This page from AA.COM will give you an idea of what is/is not acceptable. I would assume that most airlines go by the similar rules.

Domestically, the only airline I know of that doesn't permit animals in cabin or cargo is Southwest (I imagine they would have to make an exception for guide dogs). Most other airlines allow dogs and cats (sometimes birds), but not usually other exotic pets, in an approved carrier that fits underneath the seat in front of you. Reservations are necessary and fees apply, and there's usually a limit of 2 per flight in coach and 1 per flight in FC, sometimes less. Check with the individual airlines on this.
Internationally, it varies quite a bit and you should find out the rules/regulations with each carrier and also the requirements for entering the destination country.

Most airlines do take pets in the cabin. It is dependent on two things. 1. They limit the number of total pets per class of service. If a person needing a seeing eye dog needs your space, they may bump you to another flight but you will still go.
2. You must have an approved under the seat carrier. You can get those at most pet stores. Every airline is different on maximum dimensions. Check the airline's website or call them.
It costs between $50-100 each way to take your pet. I moved with my cats this past fall and AA charged $80 per cat. It was worth it.
If you are one of those people who would check your pet in cargo, all airlines have stopped taking pets if the tempature is over a certain amount due to the heat. They also have limits on cool temps. Good luck!

I've never seen dogs on a plane. Are they allowed to roam freely and meet the passengers? Is there a seat belt requirement for them? Or they should be in kennels or whatever those things called, like a cage to carry an animal? Are they counted as a carry on? Where do you keep it? Under your seat?

I've been on flights where dogs were allowed. Sometimes it works out, but other times it has been a horrible flight for the dog and all the passengers. If you do take your dog, make sure that it is not likely to bark for the entire trip. I know that when my parents took their cat on a plane, they gave her some sedation prescribed by their vet. Very effective and humane for the pet. Good luck.

I purchased a soft carrier for my Shih Tzu when he was a puppy. He never flew though and probably never will since he's 16 lbs now and no longer fits "comfortably" inside his carrier. What's funny is, the carrier's rated for up to 25 lbs but there isn't even a remote possibility that a 25 lb dog would fit in this thing.

Only once have I sat near a pet....a cat. The owner took him/her out of the carrier and he/she was so well behaved. Sat on the owner's lap most of the trip. Luckily I was next to the lady so I got to enjoy this cute kitty too.

I have never been on a flight with a pet in a cabin. I think that it would be terrible. What if the dog kept on barking. Also a lot of peaople are allergic to cat or dog hair. I cannot see how an airline could allow this. Petless in seatlle.

I seem to get the flights with cats--a cross country flight last year with a woman who seemed very insulted that she couldn't get an entire aisle to keep her carrier in the floor during takeoff, then up in the seat for the flight. The attendant did move her to a 3-seat side with just one other person on the aisle. I was surprised they didn't make her push the carrier under the seat for takeoff. Then she put it up in the empty seat for duration of flight--she was fussing over it constantly and we could hear it mewing. It was somewhat sedated.
Just last fall I flew from Paris to US and couple brought two cats in carriers on plane and said they had a dog in cargo. They also moved around to get some empty space, but the attendants did require them to push the carriers under seat for takeoff. The cats were sedated and were only noisy during takeoff, descent, and landing.
My sister used to take her terrier on trips but decided the price, restrictions on number of pets, etc. was too much. Also, her dog is a nervous traveller via auto and was just as nervous on the plane.

I don't want to fly with my dog but I must. I don't want to check my dog and so I hope to carry her in the cabin with me. My concern is that she may be too large for what the airline may consider to be of acceptable size. My fox terrier stands to 15" tall at the shoulders. She will fit into a soft-sided carrier recommended by the airline (20" x 11" x 11"
but she is unable to stand up and turn around comfortably. It's a 1-hour flight and my carrier allows her to free her head from the carrier during the flight. My veterinarian says this should be fine and he has offered her a light sedative if necessary.
Though this is not an ideal way to travel, I know that she will be fine. My concern is whether the airline officials will permit her to travel in this carrier.
Is there any information or experiences that you can share with me? Thanks!

What airline? Even though this is an old thread, I have to again agree with AAFF about preferring a plane full of pets rather than SOME of the kids (certainly not all) I've had to be near on long flights.
I haven't seen a seeing eye dog on a flight but had wheelchair-bound cruise ship passengers in one of my stores with their support dogs. What an amazing animal! So obviously they're also allowed on cruise ships.

I would check directly with the airline(s) that serve that route. Different carriers seem to have slightly different rules.
Here are some of the stated restrictions from Northwest's in cabin policy:
"For the safety and comfort of your pet, please make sure your pet can fit comfortably inside your carry-on kennel. The kennel must be large enough to allow your pet to move about. No part of your pet may extend outside of the kennel.
The maximum kennel size permitted is 17Lx12Wx8H inches (43Lx32Wx20H cm).
The combined weight of your pet(s) and kennel may not exceed 15 pounds (6.8 kg)."
And here's Delta's policy which makes no specific mention of your pet being able to move about inside the kennel:
"Your pet must be small enough to fit comfortably in a kennel under the seat directly in front of you. Maximum carry-on kennel dimensions are determined by your flight. You must contact Delta Reservations to determine the appropriate kennel size."
Unfortunately, I have no experiences to relate as to how individual agents will interpret/enforce these policies. Good luck!

You take the animal out of the carrier and walk/carry them thru the metal detector with you while the carrier goes on the conveyor belt.
Most airlines will allow any FAA approved carrier. If the carrier is FAA approved it says so on the tag when it is bought. I would still confirm the brand/model/size with the airlines, however.
