Another cloting question for the women. I was in a travel store this week-end and found a coat that is extremely light weight which would make it great to wear around on trips where you are in and out of buildings or to stuff in a suitcase. The brand is Kiko. It is very light weight silk with a poly fiberfill type of stuffing and has silk lining. The price was right--reduced from $350 (which you'd have to be a fool to pay) to $97. Here is my question. What type of temperature range would this coat work for? I tried it out around the block the other day when it was about 30. It wasn't warm enough for that. The clerk had no clue about the coat. Does anyone have anything similar and can you tell me about what temperature ranges you are comfortable in it. After I got it home I started to wonder if maybe it is similar in warmth to a quilted silk blazer for indoor wear. but then again why would it be long if that were the case. I looked on TravelSmith and Magellan to see if they have anything similar but couldn't find anything. thanks.

I owned something that sounds identical some years ago. As it was black and had knit cuffs and tuxedo collar, it went in and out with me everywhere at work (in a Northern city in NA)and then to Paris on vacation in October. Depending on what I layered with it, I think it would have done in all seasons except a genuine winter snowstorm or a soaking rain.

Sounds like you picked a winner at a good price (now I am nostalgic for mine which was retired after a 10 year noble lifespan as grist for the costume mill in my daughter's university drama group.)

I have a jacket fairly similar to that, only not so expensive. POlyester is not a particularly warm lining, so I would say it would be okay for early Fall or late Spring. It might be okay at night in those times if it's not colder than usual. I don't think I'd wear mine if it were below 50F, and if dark out, it might even be a little chilly at 55.

Sounds like it might be okay down into the high 40s if you layered it. I took a black jacket with polyester lining (and no fiberfill) to Paris in October and with layers it worked well. (40s and 50s)

I'm from southern California so I tend to freeze to death below 60 degrees. I'm sure you would handle cool weather much better than I.

I would love to know the names of some travel stores which specialize in clothing which travels well, looks great, stylish, and is adaptable to a variety of situations. I usually search for travel clothing in my regular places to shop. Thanks.

I have a similar Kiko coat; it's a washable velvety fabric on outside, poly filled, silk lined. I bought it (on sale, also!) 2 yrs. ago this same time for a planned Feb. trip to France, but family emerg. canceled trip. I'm taking it to Paris this March. I love it for weather here in Pgh. when it's between 40-50. Mine is kind of oversized (Kiko runs that way), and I can get lots of layers under it, if necessary. I think you'll get lots of wear out of it.

Chico's has a very nice line of travel wear for women (www.chicos.com). If you live in a city with a Chico's store, they are currently having an end of season sale. I recently picked up a few pieces for my May trip.

Silk is very warm and very light - therefore, silk underwear, which is also nice against the skin. Those silkworms knew how to keep warm and cozy!

In China, for hundreds if not thousands of years, silk has also been used as fill inside jackets. So, instead of down filled jackets, they used silk filled jackets. Extremely light and warm. Silk has also been used for extremely warm and lightweight comforters.

I would say that in your case the silk is mostly for show and not for warmth. Silk is beautiful to look at as well. Now, those silkworms really knew what they were doing!

So, in your case, buy the coat for looks rather than for warmth, since it is polyester filled.

I just saw a polyesther filled quilted polyesther coat in the Victoria's Secret sale catalog, it looks light but warmish.

I finally found and bought D2 Drizzle coat to my amusement through QVC ...

I was hunting it down for a year.
Hooded weather resistant coat.
When it arrived it was so oversized and I didn't liked it.
After reading this I went and typed in "coat by Kiko" and got no valuable info.

This sound like the same coat I have been searching for many of years. If you have this or know where I could find this coat I would love to buy it. I live in Minnsota and love this coat. it is a KIKO long black velvet oversized. lightweight. pearly buttons inside is quilted and soft brushed silk. I would love to buy this from you. I have done alot of research to find this coat and found the maker to go out of business.

Suggest a Thrift store or ebay search might be the best route after all these years - or move on to something new?
