Hotels and restaurants near Music Circus in Sacramento?
In August (hot, hot, hot, I know 
) we'll be in Sacramento for Evita with Eric Kunze. I have gotten some good ideas already, but haven't made up my mind yet on hotels and restaurants within walking distance to Music Circus. If anyone is familiar with the area I would appreciate your input.

Janisj, I'd like to keep it to about $150 a night if possible. We'll be there five nights, so it can add up. A friend recommended Residence Inn, but they want upwards of $200 or more. At present I have the Capitol Inn in reserve and they are about $100 a night. From the map, I can't tell if you can walk to Music Circus from there. Suzie, I'll check out the hotels you mentioned too. Thanks.

Do you mean "The Inn Off Capitol Park"? If so it is at 16th and N streets, the music Circus is at 15th and H streets so it is a 6-ish block walk. I don't know much about the place except to drive past.
A lot of folks have really good luck w/ Priceline in Sacramento. As long as you keep to 4 star, you are only likely to get the Sheraton Grand or the Hyatt Regency. Both are very nice, and both are walking distance from the Music circus. You can probably get them for the region of $75-$90 per night. August is not prime business travel season so their occupancy should be down and easier to bid low on PL.

Before you bid - check out biddingfortravel.com and betterbidding.com They will give you useful info about Priceline.
And on PL - be sure to use the "name your own price" feature. PL is also a straight booking site - but the great deals are on the name your own price side of the site.

Seriously, it's not for everybody but we've always got the Sheraton Gr or Hyatt for prices from $55 to $125.
If you get either and have a rental car, park it youself at the city lot right near the Communtiy Ctr/Sheraton Grand. Sheraton will give you a discounted parking pass with in/out privs.
If Toeds is out there she might be able to give better info on d'town parking.

I would be very careful about the area near the MC. One block either way can make the difference between a nice area and a not so nice area.
I used to work not to far from there and I know there are a couple of places just across the street. I would stick with those or I would look closer toward the capital building. It seems the Clarion is just across the street and looked pretty good from the outside.
We looked at the Sterling Hotel as a wedding reception site and it was very nice. If the price is right that would be my first pick.
I don't think I would look at anything directly north or east of the MC. I would stick with west and south from there.
I don't recall any Residence Inn's being close in to downtown.
There is a little known place to eat called "Moxie's" it is to far to walk, but just a five minute drive. Plenty of street parking.
It looks like a dump from the outside, but is great on the inside and the food is probably one of the top ten in Sacramento.

Things have changed a lot james3939 - a LOT. There are high end condos at 10th and J of all places, and busy restaurants all around. There are no hotels towards Alkali Flat so the OP really does not need to worry about getting into a bad area. Plus when the Music Circus lets out there are hundreds of others walking around, so getting back to any pricelined hotel will be totally OK.
There is a big new Residence Inn at the corner of 15th and L.
And Moxie's "little known" - I don't really think so.

Hi all, Residence Inn was recommended to me - it's where the actors were lodged last fall. But, alas, it's $235 and up. Thanks to your suggestions (and Kal's keen eye) I was able to snag a $104 rate through Hotwire at the Sheraton Grand. I'm happy with that - very happy. Moxie's is a definite for sure. So, Sacramento, here we come!

The restaurant right inside the Sheraton is really good so an evening when you don't want to go far that is a good choice. (I did a secret shopper visit there so had to try several different dishes from every course)
Then just around the corner (on the same block behind the Sheraton) are the Esquire Grill and a few other really good places. You will run out of time LONG before you run out of good places to eat -- we eat pretty darn good here in Sactown

We ate at the Sher's restaurant a few times during our Jazz Jubilee stays there. Good stuff and we like the setting but like you said, a lotta good ones right around that area.
We really like the open lobby bar. Good place to start an evening.
Ms Maggi and I were discussing "quiet" restaurants in D'town Sacto.
Man...I can't think of any but maybe Chops, Morton's???
Haven't hit Spataros or Mason's tho.

I really like the Public Market bar/lounge at the Sheraton -- really good bar menu. But I think the OP's daughter is under 21 . . . .
