US drivers license ok in Namibia?

I've been thinking our US drivers licenses would be sufficient for renting a car in Namibia. Is this true? I came across some websites that say we need international drivers licenses. Has anyone rented a car in Namibia and know for sure?

Your US drivers license is fine, besides they speak English in Namibia so there shouldn't be any problem reading your license.

Contact your car rental agency, or the tour operator you're using on the Namibia end, who should be able to provide the correct info.

We've never used (or needed) anything but our US license when traveling in English speaking countries.

Sandi, did you rent a car in Namibia? I thought the same but I've come across some websites (in English) that say otherwise.

We had a trip scheduled with a rental car and were advised by Avis that an Int'l license wasn't needed. Nor did our tour operator indicate that one was needed.

Unfortunately, we had to postpone the trip - hopefully will do next year.

But that is the information we were provided.

Maybe Celia will respond - she was in Namibia a few months back.

I rented a car from Avis in Windhoek last August and used only a US drivers license. An international drivers license is a crock of shit -- all it is is a translation. There's certainly no driving test, written or road, required.

Thanks! I talked to a travel agent in Windhoek who said the same thing and someone else who rented a car there. Great!

Right, your US drivers license is all you need in Namibia or in SA. We were in Namibia just last May, and the car rental people were glad to give us a car with only our American licenses. We've been in SA many times over the last 20-some years, and our American licenses are all the rental company wants to see.

I knew you were out there somewhere. Thanks for reconfirming the info on the drivers license.
