Hi Hope someone can help me with this. I am travelling to southern italy, Otranto to be exact and wondered how far 60 euros would get me per day for food. Or better yet; can anyone tell me the average cost of a meal in Italy? thanks

Shak, I can't speak for the area you are going to visit, but on our recent trip to Florence and Italy, we paid anything from 5 euro to 150 euro each for meals.

To be honest, in my experience in Europe, meals can be as expensive or inexpensive as you wish them to be. You can sit in an elegant restaurant or have meals in less expensive snack bars. We tend to do a little of both to even things out.

Hopefully someone will have a response more enlightening to the exact area you are going, but I don't think you will have a problem with 60 euro per day if you even it out varying with lower end and higher end meals during your stay.

I don't remember the meals being much different from the States. I usually notice if something is exceptionally expensive or a good deal. We had cheap meals and expensive ones (probably about $10-150 each for complete meals).

It's certainly true that seafood will be far less expensive in Otranto than Rome or Venice. I think 60 euro could be ok if you are careful with your wine orders.

The nicest person on this board, Statia, definitely got it right. I spent 5 euros for pizza and a drink, 20 euros for dinner and then I also spent 27 euros for espresso and some flambe crepes. Just like the States, it all depends where you eat and as some others have mentioned whether or not you're ordering wine and/or drinks.

You'll eat very well on 60 euros a day for one person. You'll probably gain a couple of pounds a week. We ate very, very well on 30 euros a day per person. We just made sure that we didn't dine in tourist areas.

It is very cheap to eat in Southern Italy. A pizza is 3 or 4 Euro. My husband and I would both order one and the dinner with wine, water and salad would sometimes be as low as 13 Euro (and we had leftover pizza for lunch the next day). You can certainly spend more if you want, but you don't need to. We would have our morning cappucinno and correnetto for 3 Euro total...try that at Starbucks ! I am in severe cappucinno withdrawal. It's just not the same here.

I plan to make it on 15 dollars a day for food during my vacation. I do the self catering thing.
I go to delis and get bread, cheese, and meat. I go to markets for fruit and some veggies. I will eat some pizza slices and some anti pastas and salads at a few restaurants. Also some tavola caldas are cheap, good and filling. I have always eaten very well in Italy

It's totally up to you. We got some salami, bread, cheese and a bottle of wine and had a picnic for about 8 euro. We also went to nice restaurants for over 100.
