If you don't mind a bit of a walk you might want to take the train to llandudno Junction. Trains from Holyhead do not require a transfer, with the total trip taking less than a hour. The walk is nice with a great view of the castle.

Note that Conwy is (or was) a request stop. This means that you should tell the conductor that you'd like to be set down there.
If you miss it, no big deal unless you have luggage and are staying in Conwy. Conwy and Llandudno Junction stations are maybe a mile apart, and the castle is between the two. Plus the walk walk from Llandudno Jnct approaches the castle from across the River Conwy, which is a great view.

Also, don't neglect Conwy town. Conwy was essentially a fortified English colony in Wales, and the castle, town and river formed an integrated defensive system.
The medieval town walls are nearly intact and can be walked for much of the perimeter - offering great views of the coast to the north and Snowdonia to the south.

Conwy is only a request stop on certain trains. Others will not stop there even if you ask until you are blue in the face!
The railway actually skirts through the castle walls,and the station in Conwy is practically next to the castle

The following trains run at a decent hour out of Holyhead and stop on request at Conwy
Holyhead 14.49 Conwy 15.45
" 15.49 " 16.34
" 16.46 " 17.42
These are all direct trains. Others which involve a change in Bangor are
" 09.26 " 10.23
" 09.51 " 11.42
" 11.52 " 13.34
These are weekdays. Let us know if you are travelling at a weekend.

I was reading the national rail site and wasn't sure about what kind of fare to choose. We will be there only 1 day; my husband is 68 and I am 60. Do we qualify for seniors there? No humor intended!!!

To get the Senior rail fare, you need to buy a railcard which costs something like £20 and is valid for one year. This entitles you to a discount of 33% off most fares. It's a good deal if you're spending some time in Britain, but not for a short day trip.
