Hiring a car and driver in NYC and/or Brooklyn

I want to take my 77-year-old mother to visit her hometown of Brooklyn (she hasn't been there since the 1950s). We have to take Amtrak because she won't fly. She also hates cabs and I don't trust myself driving in New York, so I'm wondering if it's possible to hire a car and driver to be available 12 hours a day for a few days (we will probably end up staying in Manhattan). I think we're looking for a tour-guide kind of thing with someone who will stick with us. We both have mobility problems so a lot of walking or subways is out of the question. Any thoughts? (And no, I am definitely not rich; I'll have to work overtime the rest of my life to pay for this).

Gosh, that would be quite expensive?

You can't convince her you'll take her but taxis will have to do?

Anyway, go to www.newyork.citysearch.com and do a search for "limousine service". There are lots and lots.

Telaviv is highly recommended all the time by locals on the AOL NYC travel board for well maintained vehicles and mannerly drivers.

I did a quick search on the web and can suggest the following. Other than Gray Line, I don?t have any personal knowledge of these outfits, so you may want to search them a bit before you book anything (or post a specific question here):

Gray Line Tours (http://www.graylinenewyork.com) There are a NYC institution.
You can take their buses for tours of various parts of Manhattan. They have a 2-hour tour of Brooklyn for $35. They also will set up special group tours, but it seems you need 10 people; however you don't lose anything by contacting them. For information please contact the Gray Line Groups and Charters Department:
Telephone: 1 800 669 0051 Ext. #4
Fax: 1 212 445 0850
E-mail: [email protected]

A Friend in New York (www.friendny.com/tour.html) They will design a tour for you, with a professional, licensed guides in a private van with driver for $200 per hour with a four-hour minimum. There is a planning fee of $100. E-mail at [email protected], or download the short questionnaire on their website and fax it to (201) 610-1497.

Beechwood Tours (http://www.beechwoodtours.com/custom.php) They seem to specialize in hotel and show tickets, but you could check their website or call them at 888) 633-7315.

Discover New York. (www.discovernewyorkwithkittgarrett.com) High-end personal tour guide. They have a 2.5 hour Brooklyn tour described as follows "Explore some of New York's most charming neighborhoods: Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, and Carroll Gardens. Enjoy the cinematic view of Lower Manhattan across the river and walk the tree lined streets where artists and writers sought inspiration and the wealthy found refuge from Manhattan. Discover the architecture, shops and culture of the "Brownstone Belt". Includes transportation by van and a guide. Cost is $2,000

Also try searching the web under "tour guide new york" "custom tours New York" and similar words. Good luck.

Djkbooks and Cicerone, thanks for all the help (and Cicerone, you were a doll to do all that research). When I showed mom some of the expenses involved with a private car, she said she would consider a cab. She doesn't want to do the tourist thing so much as visit all her old haunts from when she was growing up, and have someone drive her to all the different places of your youth. So, I think I'll book us at the Marriott in Brooklyn and rely on cabs from that point. This is pulling together nicely. Thanks!
