Where to stay in Nurnberg/Bamberg?
We'd like to spend three nights or so in the Nurnberg/Bamberg area, travelling by train and with an eight-year-old who is an experienced traveller. Last year Fodorites guided us to marvellous accommodation in St. Goar and Rothenburg ... any tips for this new destination?

We stayed at the Romantik Hotel am Josephsplatz in Nuremberg, and really liked it. The hotel is in the old city, about 2 blocks from the river and about a 10 minute walk to the train station. Our room was very spacious with a nice sitting and desk area. The people were great and the buffet breakfast very good with a nice selection.

Nürnberg is a trade fair city. When a trade fair is on, rooms are scarce and prices rise accordingly. You need to check prices for the specific dates that you will be visiting.
On our first attempt to visit Nürnberg, a trade fair diverted us. Last year we stayed in the Ibis Hotel Marientor. It was pretty average fare just outside the pedestrian zone near the train station, but it had the best breakfast of our whole trip.

We enjoyed the Hotel Brudermuehle in Bamberg. It's right in the middle of the Altstadt on the bank of the river. Our room had a direct view of the old town hall on the river. Nice restaurant. When we got back to our room on our last night in town, we found a 1/2 bottle of sparkling wine on ice and two glasses waiting for us.
We also met some folks who stayed at the St. Nepomuk and recommended it.

If you are interested in doing something a little different yet having a great experience, my wife and I once stayed in the Castle Schlosshotel in Pommersfelden (http://www.schlosshotel-pommersfelden.de/). It is between Bamberg and Nurnberg. It is an active Castle that the family stays in during the Summer. They have converted that old stables into rooms, however, you won't really know you are staying in a stable.
They have a nice very home cooked restaurant on site where you can actually eat the game from the Castle grounds.
You can also tour the Castle and get a bit of history while you are there. The staff was very friendly and you can access the internet from the lobby if need. They were also able to print me maps, accept faxes for me and print some business docs I needed.

I will second the Schloss hotel in Pommersfelden. The museum has a huge collection of Reubens, the largest privately held per information we received. Great setting and grounds. We did not stay there due to time restraints but I did view the rooms and they were quite nice.
