3 Days in Zurich

In Zurich itself the Grossmunster and the Fraumunster are both beautiful old churches with magnificent new(ish) stained glass. They are about half way down the Bahnhofstrasse and face each other across a bridge. The Bahnhofstrasse is a nice shopping street with some very expensive merchandise on display. Good for window shopping for me and actual shopping for those with a bit higher disposable income! Niedorfstrasse on the other side of the river to the Bahnhofstrasse has some interesting shops, it is a bit racy at night but still perfectly safe. The old town on both sides of the river has some lovely streets for walking around. The Museum behind the railway station (Bahnhof) is very interesting a worth a couple of hours. The art gallery (Kunsthaus) has a very good collection, especially of the more modern pieces and of very early religious art. There is a small mountain, the Uetliberg, just outside of Zurich (about 2 hours) that you can take a train trip to and has a nice view if the weather is clear. Rapperswil is a nice town on the shores of Lake Zurich and is about two hours away by boat and half an hour by train. If the weather is good you can take a boat ride on the lake, the Zurichsee, or on the river, the Limmat. There are quite a few nice towns within a two to three hour train trip from Zurich. St Gallen has a very nice abbey with a spectacular library containing very old illustrated manuscripts and books. Bern is a lovely medieval town with lots of arcades instead of footpaths (good for when it is snowing!). Lucerne is an easy day trip away. There is lots to see. For eating the Oepfelchammer is a really old tavern/restaurant that serves traditional swiss food. The Adler does good fondue. I am not a big fan of Swiss food so my favourite restaurant is the Blue Monkey, great Thai food!

The Marriot is quite near the railway station I think, so very central. Unfortunately Sandy nothing is reasonably priced in Zurich! We like the Blue Monkey which is off the Niedorfstrasse and the China Garden which is off the Bahnhofstrasse. There are lots of choices, particularly around the Niedorfstrasse.

The Marriott is about a 5 minute walk from the main railway station, which is basically the center of town. Please note that you will be visiting over Christmas week. I think you may find many restaurants closed that week. Also, in Switzerland NO stores and very few restaurants are open on Sunday. Shops in Zurich close at around 4 pm on Saturdays. Fortunately, museums are open on Sunday. I think all the advice on sites, etc given above is good. The city is all lit up for Christmas with Chritmas trees in virtually every square. It is really beautiful, so don't let the closed stores put you off - it's too expensive to really shop in Zurich anyway!
FYI, the Marriott has a very good Thai restaurant, and that would be open on Sunday. (Most restaurants in hotels are open on Sunday). Other good restaurants include the Terrase, the Odeon (a pub really but good food), and the Krone Hall (famous city institution). There are several guild houses along the Limmat that have restaurants, they might be interesting. Check the rants and raves section of this website for other suggestions.

going to Zurich in mid-Feb for 3 full days (arr Fri
morning and depart monday morning). Did you go and
can you offer any travel tips?
We are thinking a day train trip on sunday and museums
and exploring Zurich on friday and saturday but open
for any suggestions.
