cobblestone street in New York City

Can anyone tell me where there is a cobblestone street in New York City. I believe there is one in the East Village/Lower East Side area but don't know the exact location. Anyone know what (and where) I'm talking about. Thanks.

I'm not sure there are any left. I remember when they were tearing up lots of the cobblestone streets in the West Village Maybe around Spring Street? or Soho?

Several in the Meat Packing district, and I've seen others around Soho/West Village (where I live), but I couldn't for the life of me tell you where!

There is definitly at least one left - at least as of last Saturday. Someone I know was there, she just can't remeber which street it was as she is not from New York and was with people who knew their way around. Therefore she wasn't exactly sure where she was. She knows she was around 2nd Street and 2nd Avenue. I also recently read about an area with cobblestone streets in the East Village/Lower East Side area but an exact location was not given. I will be in the city next weekend and though I would like to go there as I also was surprised that there were still any left in New York. Was just hoping someone knew the exact location. I'm sure there is only a small area left and it could easily be missed unless you knew where to look. So if anyone knows please advise. And thans to Diane and J for trying to answer.

I live on a cobblestone street in the West Village! And, as a matter of fact, there are many such streets in NYC. Streets with less traffic are often preserved in that way. In the W. Village, Horatio and Jane are both cobblestone west of Hudson; I'm sure many of the other east-west streets there are too: Maybe Bank, Perry, W. 11th, etc. Also Wooster, Greene, Mercer in SoHo (but not where they cross Spring, Prince, Broome, Grand, etc.). I love the European feeling the cobblestones lend to these parts of the city. I've not noticed cobblestones in the E. Village but they could well exist!

There are lots of cobblestone streets left in the city (the correct term is "belgian block", if you care). If you go far west in Tribeca and SoHo, you'll find a few.

I also live on a cobblestone street in Dumbo, Brooklyn. Almost all of the streets in my 'hood are cobblestone. Many still have the old rail still embedded in them! So if you feel like a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge, take the first stairway down, take a left, go under the overpass, and voila, you'll be in cobblestone heaven.

Suzanne, have you had a hard time telling people you live in DUMBO?

xxx: Yes, I have! Most people don't know where it is (just north of Brooklyn Heights). It's one of those made-up names like SoHo and Tribeca. DUMBO = Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass.

Suzanne, I've visited the DUMBO area and I've always wanted to know one thing. Where do you go for daily conveniences? Is there any grocery stores or convenience store near you? It seemed to me that if you needed milk or a pack of gum, you have to plan that before you get back home. I didn't notice anything like that in the neighborhood. Maybe I just missed it or maybe there's something new since I walked through the area.

Hi James - I remember reading your Brooklyn trip report about a few months ago!

We do have a small grocery store on Washington and Front Street...which is one block west of the Manhattan Bridge. It has just about everything we need, including a deli, salad bar, and fresh sushi. It opened in October 2000. Before that we always had to walk up into the Heights. We still go to the big grocery store in the Heights about 3x a month (it's about 7 blocks away).

As a side note (I just can't contain my excitement here) I am buying a condo in one of the warehouse buildings down here...was just approved today. Yee-ha!

Oops, I meant one block EAST of the bridge. West of the bridge is Vinegar Hill. I have no idea where THEY shop.
