Questions about Singapore

I am going to Singapore by myself in October for about four days and I was wondering 1) how safe is it for a young woman to travel alone, are there any areas in Singapore I should avoid? 2)where can i find a cheap but nice hostel or hotel in singapore- i haven't had much luck finding places on-line.
It'll be my first trip to SE Asia and I'm terribly excited, but a little wary. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I don't know where you live, but I'd say that Singapore is the safest city I've visited. I always enjoy Singapore as a nice stop on my way in or out of someplace more remote. Singapore is the most expensive place to visit in SE Asia, so there aren't hoards of inexpensive hostels like there are in Thailand.

As a french expatriate living in Singapore, I would say that there is no problem travelling alone in Singapore. So don't worry !
As for the hotel, check "hotelgallery.com.sg". I heard it was nice.

Agreed, never felt safer in a huge city than I have in Singapore! It is very expensive however! Don't think there's such a thing as a cheap hotel there!

let me tell you i'm a Singaporean, and i welcome you to my Singapore.
Singapore is the safest place i ever know in SEA.You do not have to worry to travel alone day or night.Singapore is not very expensive city to travel but of course costly than our neighbour M'sia. You may look for SEA hotel or 8 storey hotel.

Hi Kate,Singapore is one of the few cities in the world where you can walk anywhere at 2am and feel completely safe. The other is Tokyo. What is your budget for hotels? Perhaps I may be of assistance. You can write your ques here or e-mail directly.

Singapore is eerily safe. I lived there this summer and am a 33 year old women - was there as a (masters) student from the states interning with Yahoo. 1) Stay at the YMCA on Orchard Rd (not the other one). They have 4 bed dorm styles rooms or I stayed in a nice, regular room. Great location, tons of buses and fab staff (ask for Bino). 2) yahoo.com.sg for other Singapore info. 3) its extremely hot. I found it the most warm of the 8 asia countries, no breeze. 4) I use asia-hotels.com for accommodations in Asia.

These days you can actaully get quite deent accommodation in Singapore for around S$50-80. The YMCAs are actually expensive compared to a large number of smaller almost 'boutique' style hotels. Agree www.asiatravel.com is a good site. The 'Inn' is excellent value at I believe S$80-100. The MRT system is cheap, cheaper than Bangkok's Skytrain.
Singapore is actually more 'liberal' than many would pressume.
