4.5 Earthquake Hits St. Thomas

Interesting story: earthquake hit St. Thomas this morning. Residents reported it was the most severe one ever felt there, whole buildings were shaking. Fortunately no injuries reported.

http://new.onepaper.com/stthomasvi/?...-Local&p=51830

Yes it was! Seems it was because the epicenter was 20 miles south of St. Thomas that made it appear to be so rough. Usually they are north of us. I haven't felt one like that in 30 something years!
Ronnie

The Virgin Islands is in a seismically active area where the Caribbean and the North American tectonic plates meet far beneath the sea, and it's only a matter of time until St. Thomas is hit by a devastating tidal wave (tsunami) like the one in 1867 which entered Charlotte Amalie Harbor and devastated the shore areas on St. Thomas as well as St. Croix - the wave was between 17 and 21 feet in height.

http://new.onepaper.com/stthomasvi/?...-Local&p=44355

That is true of the entire Caribbean basin being affected by earthquakes as far away as Portugal and the resulting tsunami.

We were considering real estate in the USVIs, but we were steered away by our agent for two reasons, the first being the rising crime rate, and the second being that area is particularly prone to seismic disturbances. Today's earthquake was from a fault that is only 20 miles from St. Thomas.

There's crime in the USVI's???
Horrors!!!
Some posters on this forum seem to be of the opinion that reports of crime on the islands is all a media hoax perpetrated by people who are trying to steer business to other areas.
Or that it's the work of Hawaiian travel agents and timeshare owners.
Hmmmm. Whom should I believe?
Oh Hogan, dear heart! If you were thinking about investing here and if a little bit of an earthquake would turn you off - well, maybe you'd better go elsewhere and channel into the earth's inequities! It weren't no big deal - a shudder, a clinking of glassware. The earth moved - so WOT!

I couldn't agree more with "resident"! My husband and I were gang raped on our honeymoon in St. Thomas, but that didn't deter us from returning, so a little ol' earthquake shouldn't deter you!
