My wife and I are going to Timothy Beach on St. Kitts in Feb. We are pretty active during the day and we will want to visit Brimstone Hill, etc. But for shorter trips we love walking. Should we rent a car or take cabs/busses when we leave the resort area? Any good restaurants we can walk to, maybe within 2 miles? Thanks.

I always have a car. If your there for a few days, your better off using a taxi. If your there for a week or two, rent a car, taxi's will be expensive. You can explore more with your own car. Some people will tour the island with a taxi driver then go back to interesting places on their own. Drivers license is $25.00US. I use Tropical Tours, (869)465-4039. "Richie" will meet you at the airport and set you up. From Timothy Beach Resort into town is to far to walk. In the immediate area you have The Sunset Cafe at Timothy Beach, Marshalls at the Horizons, excellent food, PJ's, Italian-good pizza, The Doo-Wop, also Italian, not bad but got pricey, The Garden Room at Frigate Bay Resort, and the new Tex-Mex restaurant at the opposite end of the beach from TBR. Another reason for the car is the excellent restaurants in and around Basseterre.

Timothy Beach is about a 1/2 hour ride to Brimstone, and a car (or taxi) is necessary. However, if you want to visit any of the beaches beyond Frigate Bay (South Friars is the nicest), but there are so many nice ones along the Kennedy Simmons Highway, you will need a car (or taxi service). It's just way too hilly to hike or bike. Friars Bay is less than a 5 minute car ride from Timothy, but it's a very hilly 5 minutes. But being at Timothy, you are right at Frigate Bay Beach and walking distance to golf course and casino.

My wife & I will also be visiting St. Kitts in Fefor the 4th time). We always rent a car from Avis. Don't forget that driving is on the left-and enter round-abouts to the right. Takes ~1 day to get used to. When people beep it just means "I'm here". <BR><BR>

We are staying at the Golden Lemon. Will want to golf at least once and go to the south beaches, would you recommend a car? We are only there 4 days and airport transfers are included in our hotel package. <BR>Thanks.

I think it would be much more efficient to hire a taxi. Golden Lemon can arrange this for you. I can also give you the name of a very friendly driver that I have used (I need to find his card at home). However, I have had a number of drivers on the island and all have been very friendly. The taxi drivers all drive vans which are spacious. They're also very proud of their island and will love showing you around. They are very accommodating and you can tell them to pick you up at a certain time. Also, they're not that expensive and renting a car on St. Kitts is expensive. There are a number of nice beaches on the southern portion of the Island (Friars (the best for snorkeling), Frigate, Cockleshell, Turtle and White House Bay (not really a beach but great snorkeling)).<BR><BR>If you plan to drive for more than 1 golf and 1 day of south beach excursions, then maybe you should get a car... but I think you'll be very pleasantly surprised by the hospitality and flexibility of the taxi drivers. If you tell them what time you want them to pick you up at one beach and drive you to another, I'm sure they'd agree to your schedule and you could probably negotiate an inexpensive rate. I imagine Golden Lemon has certain drivers it favors also.<BR><BR>As for golf, right now it's a 9-hole course... there's a lot of construction b/c Marriott is investing in the course and they are expanding it to make it an 18-hole course and a 9-hole course (Marriott opens next November) ... I just returned 12/30 and I played the 9-hole back to back to make it 18.<BR><BR>p.s. -- be careful, you actually enter roundabouts to the LEFT when you drive on the left.<BR><BR>Have a great trip!

OOOps! Brad is right-enter round-abouts on the left. He is also right about the taxi drivers. They are very reliable. If you take a taxi to a destination, they will also pick you up at whatever time you specify. It is not uncommon to use the same driver for your stay. My wife and I like to be free to do whatever we want whenever we want, so we like to drive. Whether you drive or rent a taxi depends on what your plans are. For 4 days at the Golden Lemon you are better off with a taxi. Enjoy your stay-you'll love it.

Per my previous post, if you do decide you need a taxi, I had a very nice guy named Bradford "Tweedy" Tweed. His card lists various phone numbers -- 465-7857, 465-7267 and a beeper - 467-8131. He's very pleasant, although I only used him for rides from and to the airport. But I know he does beach transport and island tours. Good luck.

Incidentally has anyone stayed at the Jack Tar on St. Kitts recently. What's it like? ie. the accomodation, kids club, beaches etc... Jane - We stayed at the Golden Lemon last May. Thier driver is a wonderful man named Soloman who met us at the airport, took us on the island tour, drove us to dinner a number of nights, and took others to beaches and golfing during the day. He was so helful that eight of us took him out to dinner one night. We were there a week and never felt trapped without a car. Of course, there were not many of us at the inn at the time and his availability could be more limited when the inn is busier. Have fun!<BR>
