Well, I found some good recommendations for Hotel Europa in Madrid on this site. However, I'm wondering if anyone found a really great budget hotel that is even better than the Hotel Europa. Also if you have any bad experiences with this hotel, please let me know. BTW, I'm looking for a double room (or twin room), for under $75 a night.<BR>Thanks,<BR>Vanessa

Vanessa: We stayed at the Europa a few years ago and thought it was great for the price. It is located well, just a few steps from Puerto de Sol, near subway stop, restaurants, walking distance of Plaza Mayor, etc. It was spotlessly clean throughout. There is a cafe downstairs with outside tables. We enjoyed sitting there, sipping Sangria and watching the paseo. Staff were pleasant and helpful.<BR><BR>Our room was decent size and had a great bathroom. Nothing fancy, but we would certainly stay there again.<BR><BR>j

I stayed at the Europa in 2000. As Joanne mentioned, it's clean and the location is very good. Price was great too. My room was pretty small and I've slept on nicer matresses. The one in my room wasn't awful but was a bit worn. Still, for the money the place was very good and I think it would be hard to find a better place in that price range. I would be happy to stay there again if I'm lucky enough to go back to Madrid.

Europa is in an excellent location and the staff could not be more helpful. Stayed there twice and would not like to stay anywhere else for the money. We walked around and had a look at some of the other budget hotels but you cannot beat the location.!!! Book early!!!

I'm back from Madrid and have stayed at Hotel Europa. Just to answer my own question, in hopes of helping others who are planning to stay here....<BR> The hotel was very clean, good-sized rooms, spotless remodeled bathroom, great service and attention from the second you reach the front door. All of this for $60 a night. Oh, how could I forget GREAT location. The one problem I had with this hotel was the noise. I am a very light sleeper and the noise of doors slamming as other guests crawled in late at night kept me awake. Taking a nap in the afternoon was out of the question for me because of the noise. So, this place is a great bet if you're not a light sleeper.

I honestly don't remember excessive noise within the hotel(there was construction going on in front of the hotel when we were there). Of course, we don't worry about noise as we are unaffected by it. We're usually so tired from sightseeing we sleep very well indeed.<BR><BR>j

Thanks Vanessa, do you know what the differences between double, superior double and triple rooms are? Looks like you took the "double" room. I'm wondering if the superior double and triple are bigger rooms or if they have better amenities, that sort of thing. Because, $85 is still a pretty good value.

Thanks Joanne - I found it. I ended up booking the double - I need to save as much dough as possible since I'm paying a king's ransom for a room in Pamplona! Any advice on restaurants, bars or cafes?

Maria: No air conditioning. There were electric fans in both the rooms we had, but we were there in May and even then it got quite warm in the room overlooking the airshaft. I don't think I would recommend the hotel for August. <BR><BR>If I remember correctly, breakfast was not included. There is a cafe below the hotel (as I noted above) and we had breakfast there a couple of times and it was okay, but we did have to pay for it.<BR><BR>j

I am currently staying at this hotel and there is several things I want to say. It is a great location, but the hotel has a policy that you cannot take guests up to your room. I respected this policy and when I wanted a friend to stay over I said that I was willing to pay for it. That was not possible. I said I would be willing to pay for another room. That was not possible cause it was "fully booked". Now I am just so angry I would like to punch the guy in the reception.. This is by far the worst hotel in Madrid that I have experienced. One thing is to have a policy another thing is being as inflexible as possible..

hmmm... Frankly, I think it's a good policy, especially in certain urban areas right next to a street with prostitutes, which I happen to know that one is. I think you are out of line in wanting a hotel that will allow people to have "friends" staying over in their rooms who are not registered guests.

That is really the reason you think it is the worst hotel in Madrid?
