Yes, yes, yes. You really need to rent a car. Even though SBH is only 8 square miles it's very hilly and there is no public transportation. There are a few taxis but they're expensive and not akways around when you may need them. Driving is half the fun on St. Barths too with the winding roads and beautifual vistas at every turn. We've rented from Budget, Hertz, Avis and a couple of local agencies all with no problems. We always rent a Suzuki Samurai. You can also choose a Smart Car or a Jimny (among others). Prices vary greatly depending on the time of year you're on the island.

You definitely need to have a car. Public transportation is nonexistent and I wouldn't count on taxis - if you can find any, that is. Everything is spread around the island and without a car you'll be out of luck.

Driving is on the right. Be careful - the island is hilly. Roads are narrow, winding, usually unlit, many lack signs, they sometimes border hillsides with steep drops but have no guardrails. And crazy French 20-something drivers on scooters or whatever may tailgate you now and then. It can be fun - but you have to stay very alert especially at night.

I have used Budget and Island Rentals, and was happy with both. Suzuki Samurais and similar 4-wheel drive vehicules are most popular. Make sure you check your car's brakes before you drive off - you'll need them!
