Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki & Oslo

We are beginning to plan a trip to Stockholm and then on to Vastervik, Sweden. We will have 10 or more days and are exploring the possibility of trying to go to one or more of the following cities: Helsinki, Copenhagen or Oslo. I know we can get an overnight ferry to Helsinki and can get a high speed train to Copenhagen, but I am having some trouble finding schedules, prices, etc. Can someone help?

Take a Silja Line ferry <http://www.silja.us/> between Helsinki and Stockholm. You'll have great food, shopping and numerous entertainment possibilities. If you take the evening ferry out of Stockholm, you can have dinner in a nice buffet restaurant with a big picture window, as the ship winds it's way through the Stockholm Archipelago. Viking line is their competitor.

Hi Loves to travel,

I am also having trouble trying to book a ferry from Helsinki to Stockholm.

I think it is because the Summer tarriff is not available yet.

There is no hurry to book ferry tickets. Each ship takes around 2000 passengers (plus cars and trucks), so you get tickets easily later in the spring.

Why don't rent a car in Stockholm and meander down to Vastervik. You can see a lot of Swedish country before you arrive but lots of nice places to stop.

You'll drive over the Gota Canal, which crosses from the Baltic to the other side of Sweden.

The area near Vastervik is lovely too. There's a archipelago in the Baltic nearby and possibly you could take a boat ride.

From Vastervik, you can visit the Orrefors and Kosta Bod glass factories. You can load up your suitcases for homeward presents.

Oland is an island, a bit South from Vastervik. I visited this island each year. You can drive around the whole island in a few hours but it's worth stopping. I've seen flights of migrating Eider ducks passing while I watched. Then another flight of ducks. And another flight of ducks. They fly very low on the water and they take turns being the leader.

Nearby to Oland, you can visit the Kalmar castle. It's right on the Baltic and it's worthwhile stopping. You can visit inside too.

You can drive further down and then take the bridge over Sweden to Denmark. You could even stop and see if you find Hamlet at the Danish Castle nearby.

Then you arrive at Copenhagen.

What could you want more?

I recommend the second seating for the buffet dinner on Silja Line ferries between Stockholm and Helsinki. There are not so many kids running around. It is a great two hours of eating including all the beer and wine you can drink for around $50.

If you have only 10 days total I would stick to Stockholm and one other city with a day trip or two from each. IMHO Copenhagen is the most interesting and has the most to see/do of the other choices.

(I did the ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki and it was a major yawn. Helsinki has some interesting sights - but not as much as Copenhagen and it's outskirts.

What about Oslo? Is it not a good option?
