Train - Copenhagen to Berlin

We are planning on taking a train from Copenhagen to Berlin in August. There is one connection in Hamberg. Can anyone tell me how this train gets across the water after it leaves Copenhagen. Ferry, tunnel, etc.? We are curious.

The last time I rode that way, the train cars, with us in them, were rolled onto barges and towed across the Baltic.
I don't know of any change recently.

Fodors

You reach Rodby some two hours after Copenhagen, and I think your train rolls into the belly of a ferry, for a fifty minute stretch to Puttgarden. If you're quick upstairs you can take the moment for a sea view, and even a quick meal, as the train to Hamburg has a buffet car but not a restaurant car. From Hamburg you've a restaurant car: don't miss German Rail's goulash soup with roll, butter, and a glass of red wine.

Mr Brown may be recalling the non-Hamburg route Trelleborg to Sassnitz, now running only once a day. Copenhagen 1116, Malmo 1151 to 1202, Trelleborg 1300, Sassnitz 1715, Berlin Zoo 2106, and on to Leipzig. I'm afraid the only catering is on board, so your supper is in Berlin, late. Still, you'll have a good sailor's appetite.

I hope that Mr Brown is right and that the Danes put trains on barges. The idea is delightful: you'd look out of your compartment window to admire the seascape. But how would you feel on choppy seas ?

Ben Haines, London
[email protected]
Apparently the Trelleborg-Sassnitz route is also by ferry rather than barge. Here's a link with some information:

http://w1.414.telia.com/~u41402833/ts_eng.htm

The timetable at www.bahn.de shows that the Copenhagen-Leipzig route will end as of June 9 (is this correct?). But I believe the nonstop overnight train from Malmo to Berlin also follows the Trelleborg-Sassnitz route. That's what this site suggests, anyway:

http://www.danbbs.dk/~smaalipz/railo...ews_2000iv.htm

Fodors

You're right, and I missed a column. As you say, there's a night train from Malmo via Sassnitz to Berlin. Sorry

Ben Haines
