family resorts in door county

we're vacationing in Door County, Wisconsin in August. Does anyone have any recommendations for hotels or resorts? We would like to find one with a swimming pool, sandy beach, walking or bike trails. Thanks for your help.

Check out www.doorcountyvacations.com. That would probably be useful. Otherwise, you can send for a vacation guide by calling 1-800-52-RELAX. For personal assistance, call 920/743-4456 Ext. 0. Just info I got out of the Wisconsin State Journal.

From personal experience, Door County is a WONDERFUL choice. I prefer the northern half of the peninsula myself. Sister Bay is lovely. Peninsula State Park is a great place to camp, ride bikes, walk, take in the view, etc. Of course, the lighthouse tours!! Lots of neat restaurants and fun shops. A neat place to show kids is a restaurant in Sister Bay where they have actual grass growing on the roof with goats up there. Can't remember the name off the top of my head, but you can't miss it!!

Hope I've been of some assistance. Have a great time!!!

Dear Tara:

Thanks so much! We will try to narrow our search to hotels in sisters bay and will definately check out the restaurant with the goats--our three kids will love it.

Hi Jim,
The restaurant Tara is referring to is Al Johnson's in Sister Bay. The Bay Breeze in Ephraim is nice with a pool onsite and the beach is a short walk away. We also liked Homestead Suites just outside the entrance to Peninsula State Park, it also has a pool on site. Peninsula has a lot of nice bike trails. My favorite town to stay in is Ephraim, I think it is one of the the most quaint. It is also my favorite place to watch the sunset as well. But, you really can't go very wrong staying in any of the towns. The White Gull Inn in Fish Creek has a good restaurant, we always try to go for at least one breakfast and a fish boil there. You may want to reserve the fish boil ahead of time especially if you plan on going on a weekend. Trio in Egg Harbor is a good place to eat at too!

Have fun!

I can second the recommendation for the White Gull Inn in Fish Creek, which is, as a friend of mine says, "the kind of place where you just want to stay until the money runs out." Example: I checked in late on a grey afternoon in March, and carried my bag to my beautiful, cozy room (with private glassed-in porch). The phone rang. It was the front desk: "We have hot cider and popcorn in the front hall every afternoon. Would you like us to bring you up a tray?" Ahhh. The Inn has a very nice website at www.whitegullinn.com. No swimming pool, though.

The entrance to Peninsula State Park is very nearby (perhaps a mile? I'm no good at distances). That's a fine place for trails, etc.
