i have a job offer to move to salt lake..whats it like for non-mormons?

Well, Jerry, my friend and her husband moved there about ten years ago to accept a job offer made to the husband. My friend told me that every time she went on interviews for a job herself, she was questioned extensively by prospective employers about why she wasn't staying at home to take care of her husband, why she wanted a job, why she didn't have children, etc.... You may not be a Mormon yourself, but you will most likely work with them or for them, live next door to them, socialize with them, and send your kids to school with them. They tend to stick together and view "outsiders" with suspicion; I guess you would too if you had their history.

I'm a non-Mormon and have lived in Salt Lake since the early 70's. It's never been an issue. While Utah is said to be predominately Mormon, Salt Lake City is under 50% LDS...there are many, many non-Mormon tranplants who have taken up residence here. This is a terrific place in large part due to the Mormon influence! The only "issue" you might have is if you have kid(s) in Scouts--most but not all of the Troops are LDS sponsored.

We've good friends who moved there about 18 years ago and we visit them almost yearly. Not nearly as bad as it use to be. The mormon presence is for real but far overblown in how it affects your personal life.I think Greg's take is pretty accurate. New "progressive" non-Mormon mayor elected last year. Lots of young non-mormons moving to a city that is majority non-mormon.Great location if you're into sking and mt.biking. If you haven't done so already you might look at utah.citysearch.com and saltlake.org.

Isn't Mormonism a cult? I've read some really wild things about the goings on at the upper levels of the organization.

I was born and raised a non-Mormon in SLC. I would live here over many other places but someday I'm moving someplace without snow. I do get tired at times of the Mormon culture, politics and attitude but it's not that big of a problem. In my group at work there is only one LDS person out of seven people and there are no Mormons on my block where I live. If you do move here chose your living location carefully. The avenues in SL or Park City are the most liberal and diverse. Much better for non-Mormon kids in my opinion. A one-on-one interaction with a Mormon is no big deal, I just find them a little dull.

thanks all for your inputs..it is sometimes difficult to obtain objective information about a location. and when it involves moving across country, its a significant decision.

Mormonism is not a cult. It is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. It is a normal church that believes in Jesus Christ. The "wild doings" that you hear about are either the tales of ignorant people or those with an axe to grind.

I lived in SLC for one year doing graduate work (1998). I was stunned at how rude the make population was toward women. I hope I never have to return.

I was raised mormon in NV. I moved there for college with my high School sweatheart. We got married had oud first kid there. I never stayed active or went to church after leaving high school. We had our first child there. I must say I cried when we moved back to Vegas. I LOVED IT there. We had the most awesome friends. There was like 6 couples. None of them were mormon. As many people thats there, it fills so homey. There was always stuff to do. But i will advise this, live in Holladay, Millcreek, Sugar House, Salt Lake area. The more you get to the suburbs, the more gaggy the mormons get. There is som beautiful churches there downtown that are not mormon, and I dont mean the temple either. Lol Yes some people up in SLC live for that s---!! Its just Utah mormons. Las Vegas mormons are way better. Still bug the crap out of me though!!
