affordable, uncrowded east coast family beach vacation in july?
looking for a place to go in july 2000 with our kids ages 4 and 10. we like a condo complex or resort with a pool and a nice beach,but dont want to break the bank! dont want florida. any suggestions?

We live in N.C., and our favorite beaches are Topsail and Sunset Beach. They both are very quiet and family oriented. We're renting a house on the beach at Topsail this year (www.topsail-realty.com) and maybe they would have some condo units to offer. Let me know if you'd like more specific info.

I should add that i doubt any of these resort areas are going to be affordable in July... it is prime time for family vacations...similar to saying you'd like to find a bargain in the caribbean during presidents week. it might happen, but would take some effort and some luck.

Try Virginia Beach. My family went every summer when I was a child, and it was great. There is a place called the Mai Kai at 57th St and Atlantic Avenue - it's one block from the beach (across the main road - Atlantic Avenue), has a pool and laundry on site, and they have both 1 and 2 bedroom units with 1 or 2 baths and full kitchens. Virginia Beach is very family friendly, Williamsburg is just an hour away (historic Wmsburg, Bush Gardens, great outlet shopping), plus lots of museums in the Va. Bch/Norfolk area in case it rains. The Mai Kai is nice because it's about 30 blocks north of "the strip", and is in the middle of the "North End," the residential part of the beach. It's affordable (people stayed there for my wedding a few years ago...) and seems to meet all your needs.

A few years ago we stayed at Seabrook Island, SC and we LOVED it. Seabrook is right next to its big brother, Kiawah, but was much less expensive and less populated as well. It was absolutely gorgeous. Wide, empty beaches. We found sand dollars, lots of hermit crabs (your kids would love them) and we stayed in a townhome which wasn't ocean front, but came with bikes. 3br, 1bath, grill, bikes, beach chairs, a huge screened in porch, all for about $700/week in July (but again, that was a few years ago). It remains one of my most favorite beaches on the east coast. Outer Banks would be a close second.

I will throw in a vote for New England. Carolina might be a bit warm in July. The beaches in Maine like Ogunquit (softest sand you will ever step foot on) and others (like Kennebunkport where you can see Bush's vacation home) are fantastic. You will be able to eat lobster right at the docks in a wonderful New England setting. See Cider House Rules for a feeling of the area. Could also drive up to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park for a really special experience. Stop in Booth Bay Harbor on the way up there. Could also check out Mt. Washington on the way there or back.

I agree with the vote for NE - York, Ocgunquit and Kennebunkport are beautiful with Ocq. being more quaint in my opinion. It's only about 1 1/2 hours north of Logan. Camden, ME is also nice; further north, but I've only been in the fall so I don't know about their beaches. Acadia is incredible; rocky coastline and wilderness, but it's quite a drive and Bar Harbor isn't a must-see - too touristy. Southwest Harbor is amazing with the only fjiord in North America - to my knowledge. Now, I wasn't a geography major so feel free to correct me on that and my spelling, as well. Have a great vacation! Oh, if you go to Acadia and SW Harbor, take a sail on the Rachel B. Jackson! Now, look under NY and give me some advice on my trip
