New England resort for family of 17 for 50th anniversary trip
We are looking for a resort type atmosphere where there will be activities for all ages for 17 people, including 4 under 10, for 50th anniversary trip -late June, early July 2000.Ideal situation would include separate cottage but open to any suggestions.

This could get a little difficult. The Balsams in New Hampshire is a wonderful place (about 40 miles south of the Canadian border) but not sure what there is to do for children. It's a grand hotel and the food is wonderful. They have a web-site, try -- thebalsams.com
Another place in New Hampshire is Mount Washington. It appeared to be nice but not quite in the same league as The Balsams.

There are a couple places in Stowe, VT you could check out. They are The Trapp Family Lodge and the Topnotch Spa & Resort. I think they both have websites. In addition to the activities the above places offer, Stowe itself is full of recreational opportunities. They have a 5 mile long bike/in-line skate/walking path and plenty of opportunities for hiking.

Someone previously posted here recently that the Trapp Family Lodge does not allow children; you might check in to that. Also in Stowe is the Stowflake Inn; we attended a wedding there 4 years ago, and it was great fun--the entire place was devoted to the wedding guests. There are separate "condos."

I am "topping" this as I am facing this same dilema for Sept and hope that there are some new ideas. Our family is gathering from the Boston and Connecticut so it would be wonderful to find something nearby, perhaps the Berkshires or Rhode Island, or even Cape Cod.

Of course the Trapp Family Lodge accepts children!!! That must be a joke. The Mount Washington is also wonderful for family functions. The Black Point Inn in Scarborough,Maine would also be perfect. They have a separate building with 8-9 rooms on the corner of two ocean views and a swimming pool nearby - plus the main building. This one is very close to Portland, Maine if you have folks flying in.

If you are willing to look beyond New England, I would recommend Skytop Lodge in northeast Pennsylvania. They cater very much to families, we had a 50th wedding anniversary there last July it was fantastic. You can stay in the main lodge and they also have 4 bedroom cottages each with their own bathroom and patio which lock separately (no kitchens). It is an all-inclusive price, and you can eat at one of two restaurants on the property. There is an outdoor pool, a lake with boating, a golf course, tennis and you can rent bikes, hike, etc. They have lots of organized activities (like a half day kids camp each day), crafts, campfires, etc. Fairly expensive, but I don't think much more or the same as the other places mentioned above. A great place for a family reunion. Look them up on their website.

To Wondering: I am beginning to doubt whether this trip makes sense. The places with any kind of indoor facilities or on the ocean are over $300 a night per person. I have not yet checked on all the suggestions. I was surprised that the Mount Washington is booked for the weekend we would like. The Samoset looked nice, but I wonder what we would do if it was a rainy weekend. I'm still thinking about it.

Manchester, Vt. (southern Vt.) might be a good choice. Consider: 1) the Wilburton Inn, which is on beautiful grounds and has a separate house for large groups; or 2) the Equinox, with a variety of activities on site. On the Cape, I agree that Chatham Bars Inn would be very nice; also check out the Wequassett Inn in Chatham. Mount Washington Hotel in New Hampshire is quite nice, but my guess is that the Balsams is a little better. The Berkshires have some wonderful adult-type spots, but Cranwell in Lee accommodates kids, and I think they've just put in an indoor pool. Have fun!

Also, Fosters Downeast Clambake in York, Maine does FUN - albeit casual - lobster parties for a decent price. These things are always hard to plan, but usually so worth it even if it's only one night. Good Luck!

If you're looking to save money, try Purity Springs Resort on the N.Hampshire/Maine border, or try something farther away in Maine.
We went to Purity Springs for several years -- kids loved it. Great food, a lake, hikes, a pool, outings, activities, etc... they have a main lodge, cabins, and another lodge.
