Wendy, we have been to this hotel and sometimes there is the smell of sulfur from the burning of excess gas where they are drilling for oil. I would suggest you try to get an ocean view room and the smell will not be as bad.
Please don't let this worry you, its not that bad. Walk into town and enjoy, it is safe. Any other questions, leave a message.

Superclubs-don't go if you like to eat. Crappy is the best word. Ever had sliced up weiners in hot ketchup? How about pancakes deepfried in palm oil?We were there for a week and if we had stayed longer, we would have lost weight. Pool and beach are good, so are rooms, but elevators are lousy-long waits and lots of banging. Don't go if you really like to eat.We never smelled any refinery.

Just got back from Puntarena. Did not enjoy it. And do take the ocean view or you will definitely have oil smell in your room. And even if you have ocean view (we did) do leave your patio door open, otherwise you will wake up smelling oil. Food is not that great at Puntarena (but it seems to be like that in Cuba). The service is not the most cordial we've had in the Carribeans. We got stuck 45 minutes in an elevator one night. And if you want to be able to reserve at the A LA CARTE restaurant, do tip the towell girl, she will find a spot for you!! That's how it works in Cuba. And do go to any Cubans house if they invite you for lunch. We have. We thought they were inviting us but in fact once we were there they were trying to make us pay for the meal. And if you plan on taking tours, do bring small american change as you will have to tip the little music bands, the lady that gives napkins at every bathroom etc!!! Did not enjoy Cuba!!! Tourists are considered as Money-dispensing-machines.

Also, the beach at Puntarena is not the nicest either. If you go at the other end the bay, like Villa Cuba Hotel, the sand is much finer and whiter. And plus at Puntarena, you are far from the City, so you must take the bus, or coach or taxi to go into town. Ask for the taxi driver to put the meter on when you get in the car. If they don't they will charge you more that you are supposed to pay!! We have!!!!

Its funny how things change in Cuba. When we were at Puntarena, it was called Paradiso hotel, and the meals each night where very special. Rows and rows of great food. It seems each hotel is looking to make more money from each of us by cutting back on things. The hotel staff move around and I guess if the chef moves, well, there goes the food.
