We're an Australian family planning our first time trip with stopover at Singapore on the way to UK & France. <BR>Is Singapore likely to be the best spot for digital camera and video camera shopping? Does the city generally have better prices than the airport? Would we be better to shop in Australia before we leave? <BR>Any help appreciated. <BR>Thanks <BR>

Hi Carol, <BR>You should be able to get the latest digital cameras and video cameras in Singapore. Most goods are duty-free except for liquor and tobacco. So you will not get significantly better prices at the airport's duty free shops. Other than fresh produce, things in Singapore are generally less expensive than in Australia. I have done some general price comparison of Perth, Adelaide and Sydney Vs Singapore. For your camera, may I suggest you go to Sim Lim Square or Sim Lim Tower. Make sure you bargain hard, and look for a sign that says the shop is recommended by the Singapore Tourist Board.

Just back from a day shopping for elctronic products. Can't tell you about the prices at the airport. Downtown there are two towers, one a four story building and one a seven story building selling only elctronics. you name it and they've got it. some opportuinty to bargain for a lower price. Prices were better than U.S. prices where pricing is very competitive. It's a 45 minute ride from the aiprort. Taxi prices are cheap.

Hi! I'm Australian too, and the Sim Lim Tower and Rochor Rd area is indeed quite a good place to shop. Make sure you have exact details of type of equipment you want and the price in Australian city duty-free shops (Downtown, City etc). When you find the item you want YOU start the bargaining process by offering around 15% - 20% less than the Australian price, converted to Singapore dollars of course. Do not move too far away from this initial offer, and be firm when you reach your target price, say 10% below Australia's cheapest. And allow yourself plenty of time to shop, being prepared to move on if you can't get the item you want at your price. Watch for scams, check the product is in working order, and that the peripherals are thrown in (batteries, carry case, etc), not an add-on once the price has been agreed. Good Luck.
