¡Hola! I am a spanish major at a university in Va. I am planning a spanish language school experience for next summer. I don't know whether to go to Antigua or Mérida, México. Both sound nice. Any suggestions? Also, what is the weather like in Antigua during the months of May-August? Are there any problems for travelers(single female)? Do you know what the accomodations are like with host families? Thanks for any information you can provide. Patty

Guatemala is a beautiful country I will have to agree. I live in Quetzaltenango, Xela and would encourge anyone wanting to study spanish or just travel to latin america to check out Xela!

I am building a Resource page for Xela please stop by and take a look. You will find Spanish Schools, hotels, bars, restaurants...etc.

All Feedback is welcome!

http://www.trafficman.com/xelapages/

Thank you

Tom

¡Hola Tomás!
I'm interested in your Xela info as I am planning to take my husband and 10 year old daughter there next January. Do you think we'll be safe? Healthy? I am so eager to spend a month there with my family -- but I want to make sure that it will be a great time for us, especially on the safety/health counts. What do you think?

Merida, Mexico or Antigua, Guatemala ? Yes Antigua is nice but there is not much to do. I would choose Merida it is much more lively and places like Uxmal, Chitchen Itza , Celestun etc are only a few hours away. I also feel that with so many language students in Antigua you don't really get immersed in the language and culture as you end up talking English and getting pissed in the one reasonable bar in Antigua "La famosa 'Chiminea'"

Hola!

I have been to Merida and the surrounding enviorns, and I agree that there is a host of ruins etc. to go visit and see. I also have been to Antigua, Guatemala about 10 times, and I think for a family, Antigua will be great and much less expensive.

Lanuage schools are not all created equal, and alot has to do with personalities getting along, etc. Antigua as a city, is small, charming, historic, etc., and full of tourists and students. It is easy to get around Antigua, close to Guatemala City, yet far enough away to make you feel you are a world apart.

Even though we have been there and done that in Antigua many times over, I would go back again and again!

Cathy
