3 Week U.K. Trip - which places to skip?

Am going to England and Scotland for 3 weeks next spring. I've read so much info about places to see, that I am now completely overwhelmed.! There is no way to see everything, so I understand that now. I figure that I'll start in London, daytrip out, then to Bath and daytrip out. But then where. Chester? should I stay in Wales at all? Perhaps someone could let me know the best places to stay in where daytripping out would be easy. Also, could anyone recommend Scotland areas? thank you so much!!!

I just came back from U.K. yesterday. I stayed in England from 2 1/2 weeks but did not go to Wales and Scotland.
Do spend 3-5 days to explore the English Lake District. Stratford-Upon- Avon deserves a full day(although lodging is quite expensive). It takes only 20 mins from Stratford to Warwick. The people in Stratford are very, very nice. For day trips, go to Windsor and York. Cambridge is a place u can simply forget(though many people may disagree, but my experience in Cambridge is not a happy one . The people I met there were, unfortunately ,rude. I and my friend were going to the railway station, We asked the bus driver which bus we should take, he told us to wait for the next one, and then, he told us to "get off"!!! Really want to give him a punch on his nose.)The Peak district is also very good. Go to Haddon Hall and Chatsworth House.(May be very difficult to get there if u do not have a car).
Always go to the TIC fro help. Most of them are very friendly and they will help to find excellent B&Bs. Here are the 3 B&Bs in which I have stayed in.

Cambridge House (good)
9 Oak Street, Windermere, Cumbria, LA23 1EN
Tel:05394 043846

Norwood House (very good)
Church Street, Ambleside, Cumbria,LA22 OBT
Tel:015394 33349
(close to the bus stop and TIC)

Hilldeen (highly recommended)
97, Dale Road, Buxton, Derbyshire, SK17 6PD
Tel: 01298 23015

I'm an American living in Wales, and I do not think it should be skipped when visiting the UK. The thing is, the Welsh people have an entirely different culture from the English, and it is fun to see the Welsh language on all the road signs, and hear it spoken in the pubs. You feel like you're in a more foreign country. The trouble is there is just the one motorway in the south that peters out just past Swansea, so travel is slow. You just may not have time to visit, although I would recommend it.

The thing I would most recommend skipping in London is... the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. I'd been to London a half dozen times, and never felt compelled to see it, but my mother-in-law just came to visit last month, and she insisted. It was a complete waste of time. I wish she'd listened to our good judgement... there were two hours we'd never get back.

Yes, Chester is fun. Picturesque and lots of shopping. Wales is interesting for the difference in culture and speech. My husband just visited Windsor Castle and was disappointed in being limited to the courtyard and State Rooms. The gardens there, which we used to think were the best part of the visit, are no longer open to the public. The York Museum is well worth your time to visit if you should find yourself in York. And Howard Castle, north of York and off the beaten path, is one of our very favorites. We happened across it by accident but were SO GLAD we did.

Hi Barbara - I just returned from month long trip to the UK - my 4th and am planning/saving for #5. I agree with Dick - we didn't enjoy Cambridge as much as we thought we would. Fortunately we were in Cambridge as a sideline to a visit to the American Air Museum at Duxford Air Base. I'm researching family history and it was thrilling to see the British monument to WWII. We also visited the Lake District - stayed at a great place in Keswick. I'm glad that we did not stay in Windermere or Grasmere - very crowded and "touristy". We spent time in Carlisle visiting Hadrian's Wall - very, very interesting but if you visit Bath you may have had your fill of Roman ruins. If you don't want to do the Changing of the Guard then opt for securing free tickets to the Ceremony of the Keys - the 900 year old ceremony that locks the gates at the Tower of London. Very impressive!!! I was not overly impressed with Kew Gardens but then I guess once you've seen a couple dozen gardens it's hard to get excited... Greenwich is very interesting; lots of Tudor history not to mention a photo op of you at the official countdown to the Millennium. Have you considered Cornwall or even the Isle of Wight as possible 2-3 day excursions? Terrific places to visit - I have lots (!!) of information if you're interested!

Hi! There are so many things to see and do. You will have to pick and choose according to your likes and dislikes. I was in UK for 18 days. NOT enough time!! Would like to recommend a tour service that may help you with sights in England. I went on the Stones & Bones tour out to Stonehenge. Had a great time. Took most of day, but was well worth it to me and my friends. Had lunch at a lovely country inn by a river. Anyway, the tour service is called Astral Travels. It is located in London. Number is 0700-0781-016. They have many tours available to choose from and they give discounts for groups or students! As for Scotland, I recommend going to Edinburgh. It was a beautiful place. Don't need more than a day or day and a half, try seeing more if you can! Hope you have a great trip!

Dear Cindy,
Thanks for all the info. We are going to England
next June and plan on visiting Cornwall. Any
suggestions on where to stay? We know nothing
about it except for having seen some pictures in
a book and it's is also mentioned in Rosamunde
Pilcher's books. We would like to stay near the
water. Any thing you can tell us about what to see
where to go while there, ect....would really be nice.
Thanking you in advance.
