It's true. No more advance tickets or reservations. And if you show up at 9:30 you'll have blown it and won't get in (well, perhaps in January or February). In spring, summer, and fall you need to line up between 7 am and 8:30 or you likely won't have a chance.

You can almost always get tickets to Les Combarelles and Abri Blanc. Les Combarelles visits are only in French.

We've been to a lot of places, but the Dordogne Valley probably ranks in my all-time top 5. It's a very special place, and I completely understand why St. C decided to move there full-time. We rented a great little house in a great little village for our first visit there, and loved the experience. But if I were to do it again, which I might someday, I would probably stay in Sarlat.

OMG, I can't believe those sites no longer accept advance reservations! I'm very glad I visited the area -- and did so when I could still make those arrangements.

My wife and I visited the Dordogne last summer. Definitely one of my favorite places....the quaint villages you speak of are never ending. It is a really special part of France. There is so much to see....so much good food to eat. But as others have said, you really will need to rent a car. I keep a daily travel blog and I have several posts about our time in the Dordogne....please take a look , it may help you in figuring out your itinerary.

Dordogne

please look into Periloc Tours, sorry I no longer have a link. I posted reports on Trip Advisor. Can’t say enough about how wonderful their tour is. THEY drive you to each charming town, very small group, great accommodations and sensational French family are your hosts. And it is reasonable, very reasonable. Hope you can find them. Kay Mc

The market in Sarlat was great too!
I recommend a visit to Rocamadour if you get the chance.

My then 8 year old son and I went to La Foret des Singes (Monkey Forest). Why do I remember it? Because a huge monkey jumped on my back. He enjoyed the ride as I ran down the path screaming. My son enjoyed the whole thing even more!

We have booked rooms here for June. We haven't stayed there before but spent many days in Sarlat on past trips:

Sarlat Côté Jardin 13 rue du Collège - Place Pasteur, 24200 Sarlat-la-Canéda, France

We booked them on booking.com. The main draw for us is that it is very close walking to the market and center and they indicate they have free parking-which is good in Sarlat.

On past trips we have stayed at teh Best Western Renoir-nice because it has a pool and parking but a bit further walk to the market and center-not bad though:

Hôtel Le Renoir ? Sarlat - Home
