I was told that it would fit our luggage (four not so large suitcases and four smaller bags with supplies). Has anyone rented A Ford Grand C-Max? I also wondered if it had something that covers the luggage, because we do have stops on our three journeys from one city to another. I'll look into how to put in reverse and which petrol to add. Thanks.

I haven't rented or ridden in one -- but I do know they have a tonneau cover in the back compartment. However - I wouldn't think it would hold 8 suitcases. Pack light you guys

We pack pretty light, but in our three weeks we have some nice dinners planned in at least Bologna and Piemente region and want to look somewhat presentable...even by our low standards. Bob at Gemut said it could fit four medium bags (Eagle Creek) and four smallish bags holding the extra essentials. We'll try and consolidate the two smaller bags to one. By the way, showing my "vast" knowledge of cars, I never knew it was called a tonneau cover.

Probably isn't - just sounded good.

OK - in Dec I went to two (TWO) different Michelin starred restaurants in London . . . and fit everything for the trip in a 21" rollaboard. Try harder.

Depending on the size of the bags I think you'll have something on the rear seats.

It should easily take all your bags provided you don't need the third row of seats. It has a similar amount of luggage space to our Focus, and that can carry four and all their luggage easily.

Did Bob at Gemut actually promise he could deliver that particular model? I've never encountered a rental agency that could do that.

Usually if you fold down the seats the luggage isn't covered.

This video shows a tour of a relatively recent Ford Grand C-Max. It has a cargo security shade, though it might be an optional feature and not in place on your rental. Skip to 4:15 to see cargo details. (The video has obnoxious music, but no narrative, so muting the sound may help.)


"Cargo security shade" seems to be the technical term for the retractable cargo cover inside the car -- tonneau cover is more for a truck bed.

No it's a Ford Grand C-Max or "something similar" through Auto Europe (vehicle at Hertz). I did not book. I guess my other question is...I have always booked through Auto Europe directly...why would people use Gemut? I asked for a quote out of curiosity.

I think this would refer to a barrier to the elements. Truck or, in earlier days, sports cars such as my Triumphs or MGs.

yes -- my Datsun 1600 (LOVED that car), my Morgan +4 (LOVED that car) and my Spitfire (not so much) all had tonneau covers.

I have never seen a 5 door car in Europe that does not have a cover for the luggage space at the back. If by some bizarre chance you were offered one, you would be fully entitled to ask for another car. It is in the car hire company's best interest to ensure that you have somewhere safe to put your luggage because they do not want the inconvenience and cost of having to deal with thefts and the damage they cause.

As for whether a C-Max or similar will take all your luggage, you could always measure them and work out the cubic capacity of your bags, and see how that compares with the published cubic capacity of the luggage compartment of the car.
