suze, yes I agree, I think our best route is to look at international schools and get visas through them which is what we are going to start with. There are so many so it's probably just a matter of applying to them all in the New Year. BTW - to the international teachers on here - what is the application/hiring process usually like? Is there anything I can prepare for now (ex: specific references, a particular resume format, other things I'm not thinking of...)

We have taken community Spanish classes. I'm not too worried about the language issue. I think we could start before we left and continue once we're there. I know it could be frustrating at times but I think that's something that could be worked out.

oh, also, should we be researching certain types of education, is there certain exams or that sort of thing that are common in EU schools that we wouldn't be familiar with in Canada? Our school systems are quite tiny in comparison to say the U.S. and EU so I'm worried we won't know the lingo/exams/assessments etc that are common. Is that an issue to be considered further?

nicbur, if you are looking at a school with a British curriculum, they will have the IGCSEs in year 10 and 11 (9th and tenth grades). My children go to a school with a hybrid US/UK system and the high school does the IB. They will be taking the IGCSEs and the IB exams. Study up on the IB program as it is huge with the international schools.

A large school here in Prague is ISP. You can take a look at their website and see what they are looking for. It is pretty standard. http://www.isp.cz/page.cfm?p=362

It may make sense to become familiar with the British terminology which is quite common, ie key stage, reception, etc. They have years, instead of grades and run a year ahead. ie year 6 = 5th grade

Are you mixing consulates up with convents? Nobody lives in a consulate. People work there.

The embassy is where the ambassador to a country does his work, and there is only one ambassador sent to where the country has its government. In Canada, the Italian embassy is in Ottawa. But there 15 Italian consulates in Canada, and that is where representatives of the Italian government help people with visa issues or other laws pertaining to the Italian government, or helps Italian citizens living in Canada. The consul generals who work there live in their own apartments or houses. They don't live at the consulate.

For teaching abroad - Check with the Canadian Teachers Federation, they have a overseas programme, which I think is only short term. But they might have resources for you to look into. http://www.ctf-fce.ca/Default.aspx

Do you or your HB qualify for citizenship from another country? The UK or EU? If so you could start looking into how to claim citizenship.

Unfortunately, the days of Commonwealth priority status are long gone.

If you are already employed teaching (and I think you are), you might explore career opportunities teaching with the Department of National Defense. There are still some schools in Europe that will hire Canadian teachers and have them teach the offspring of Canadians working in the Armed Forces overseas.

Belgic unless you're young enough to get a youth worker visa getting a visa will be fairly hard
