Barcelona and Madrid Hotels

Hi everyone. I've been procrastinating booking hotels in Madrid and Barcelona because I am so confused by all the neighborhoods, I don't know where to start looking. I'm stopping in Barcelona for 2 nights and then 2 nights in Madrid to catch my flight back to the US after a Med cruise. I am a woman traveling alone. I'd like some place safe and near restaurants. I know Paris well and if I can compare neighborhoods, I'd like something like the 5th, 6th or 7th arrondisement. I really, really need this hotel and neighborhood advice. I've looked at Trip Advisor, but it's all Greek to me because I just don't know where to park myself. Thank you!

I'm a single woman who recently stayed here in Barcelona:

and here in Madrid:

Both were in convenient areas.

For Barcelona, I'd suggest Hotel Colon for solo travelers. It is on the Cathedral square and facing the Barcelona Cathedral. Very bustling and many eating options within 10-min walk.

The 1898 can be on the pricy side, but it is a 4-star GL, and we highly recommend it. Depending on your budget, you can also check out the Hotel Mercer in the Gothic quarter, and Hotel Majestic on the Passeig de Gràcia, our top choice in Barcelona.

If your budget is a little more modest, they the Hotel Jazz (owned by the same group as the 1898).

I am a solo woman traveler. I prefer the Eixample area in Barcelona. Cleaner and less crowded than the old town and plenty of places to eat.

I stayed on the Puerta del Sol my last visit to Madrid, but I would not recommend that.

We stayed at Hotel Colon in Barcelona last May. I agree it would make for a good choice.

In Madrid, I chose the NH Collection Madrid Paseo del Prado near the museum. Friends stayed in the area last year, so they recommended the area. Some what close to the station to the airport also. Thanks again everyone. Now I can relax. All my travel arrangements are done!
