Europe Finally..Italy train/air
Hi,
Thanks for all the help all over these threads. Would you take a high speed train for 5-6 hours or airline from Milan to Rome. I don't see how that would be efficient on time or budget?? I understand luggage etc for airline but it looks like $100.00 can get me from Milan to Rome in 1.5 hours?

I don't understand your comparison. Easyjet flies that route for about 40 euro, if you check bags and prepay, it's about 56 euro, and is only 1.5 hours or less. But the train doesn't take 5-6 hours, either, even though it costs about the same as the plane (about 50 euro, sometimes it's more like 80 euro). The train only takes about 3 hours.
Yes, you can fly for less than US $100, in fact. But the train doesn't take that long. If I were already at the airport, I'd fly if the flight times were convenient. Easyjet's are very early or 6 pm. Alitalia flies that route, also, though, for not much more.
And if I were going to Rome in order to fly out, I might fly, also, as you'd be at the airport when landing.

If you're traveling from center city to center city, you have to also count the time it takes you to get to and from the airports, which can be considerable. And the time you have to allow to get checked in and pass security. And the time to wait for your luggage at destination.
Unless there is a big time advantage to flying, I prefer the train, which is much more comfortable than a plane.

From Milan center to airport - at least an hour (the bus isn't going to leave the second you are ready, so in addition to the actual travel time you have to wait till the next bus). At least 5€.
You have to be at airport at least 1.5 hours before flight time.
From arrival in Rome airport (assuming you did not check a bag) it's at least another hour and another 5€.
Total "flight" time 5 hours. And add at least 10€ for the absolute cheapest transportation to/from the airports.
Train - 3 hours city center to city center. And you can take as much luggage as you can handle. 50€. And that's if you are going tomorrow. If you book far enough ahead it can be as low as €19.

What and where is the rest of your trip? The last leg of trip is from Milan to Rome back to LAX. YOU have been tremendous help, on what I want to do, not what others think I should do.

I think you all sound like that the train is probably easier--and may be quicker if centre to centre
