Sell me on Hallstatt (in the rain)!

One child is overseas in university; the other will be away this weekend for an XC training camp. DH and I are thinking an overnight from Vienna in Hallstatt might be lovely, except the forecast is not working in our favor. Heritage Hotel has a lake view room with balcony at almost half the regular rate that is inspiring our potential getaway.

We are not sit-around-in-our-jammies-and-relax kind of people. Our previous three visits to the Salzkammergut have been rainy, alas, and we have toured Bad Ischl and Salzburg (several times). What can we do with 18 hours in rainy Hallstaat (we will have our personal vehicle)?

Thank you!

Well I would think the Salt Mine tours will be dry - not sure of their seasonal hours though - pretty grim time in Hallstatt if raining as the views from the town itself are to me its key calling card - plus the placid lake it sits on - but if overcast or wet hiking is a wash out - I think Hallstatt is not worth it in rainy weather.

We are currently in nearby St Gilgen. The weather forecasts were terrible and had me very worried but we have only had a few light showers since we got here Friday. So while you should be prepared for rain, it may not be as bad as you think. Today was absolutely beautiful and quite warm.

Thank you both. I've been watching the weather and hoping for a dramatic change, but that doesn't seem to be in the cards. Hallstatt should be enjoyed in lovely weather. We've decided to go to Brno for an overnight instead, and will dart between raindrops in and out of museums and cafes.

Just came back from visiting Hallstatt for a few hours. It was overcast but never rained while we were there. We had a nice lunch at the Zauner and walked around snapping some lovely photos and window shopping. It was a very nice outing.

Hope you enjoy Brno.

We spent 3 days a few years ago, and it was rainy. We got several dry hours from time to time, enough for a lake cruise, for walking along the lake, visit the churches and the cemetery, and take it slow in a beautiful town. We visited St. Wolfgang and St. Gilgen one day, and yes, it rained there too. But it is so beautiful, you just ignore the bad weather and enjoy the place.
We had a room with a great terrace by the lake, and just watching the changes in the water color, on the mountains, the fog rising, it was great.
Hope you'll love it, no matter the weather.
