relaxed beaches in january

Looking for a warm beach spot in January to celebrate my husband's 50th and our anniversary-would love a swim up room or at least a hotel on the beach. Snorkeling, swimming, and kayaking would be preferred activities. I'm at a loss as there are so many choices-any help is appreciated!

Budget and your departure point might help narrow down the choices.

I don't know of any resorts with "swim up" rooms but there are some that have rooms with private plunge pools. And you can find resorts with beachfront rooms on just about every island.

As Odin says, it would help if you gave us your budget & departure point. When citing your budget give us a dollar range not some nebulous term like "affordable" or "won't break the bank" as they don't really tell us what you can afford. We need to know what you are willing to spend on airfare, hotel accommodations, food and activities. Keep in mind January is one of the most expensive times of the year in the Caribbean.

How long a trip are you planning - it can make a big difference on the recommendations you receive? So to is travel time - are you willing to take one or more connecting flights and/or ferries or even make an overnight stopover to reach your final destination or do you want to get there non-stop from your nearest international gateway airport?

Also, give us a list of the things you'd like to do/see while on your trip - sorry but you can swim and kayak on every island so those two activities don't really help narrow down your choices. Tell us too how important is snorkeling - while you can snorkel on most islands there are some destinations that are better for snorkeling than others - do you mean "walk-in snorkeling or would you be willing to snorkel where the best places are only accessible by boat?

The more you can tell us about what's in your mind's eye and what you expect from your trip the easier it will be to steer you i the right direction.

Negril Jamaica has a gorgeous 7-mile white sand beach. But the places there are more simply, rustic, no swim-up rooms or anything like that.

Thanks for all the replies-I am looking at spending no more than $4500 total. Departure point for us is St.Louis, MO. I am at a new job and it's shift work, so the length of the trip is a little up in the air right now, but I'm looking at 5-6 days. My husband is dive certified but I'm not, so out of the way snorkeling that's more interesting would be a good bet. As far as flights go, we would prefer a non stop since we will spend a day each way traveling.

<we would prefer a non stop>

I'd start with that then. Just look up online which islands you can get to nonstop flights from St Louis. That will narrow down your choices significantly.
