Full disclosure - I haven't been in years but in my experience, it doesn't change much, lol. Schat's Bakery in Bishop was wonderful and El Ranchito was decent. I second Creekside Inn as a place to stay. I tried to recall any good places to eat in Palmdale or Lone Pine but I couldn't come up with any names. Sorry!

We were camping above Mammoth a couple weeks ago. Stopped at Schat's Bakery on the way to pick up some yummy breads and danishes. They have a small deli/sandwich shop located inside where you can pick up some sandwiches to go or eat them there on the outside patio in front of the bakery. Not a lot to do in Bishop but lovely drives in the surrounding mountains.

We make this drive every September to attend a family reunion at June Lake. Unless you have a reason to stay in Bishop itself, look at options in Mammoth or at the Double Eagle on the June Lake Loop road. In Mammoth, you can ride the gondola to the top of the ski area, see the Devil's Postpile, etc.

Make sure you have a spare tire for this drive. It's a great place to visit, but the road is a washboard. Drive slow and you will be fine.

Our usual stop from LA is in Mojave for food, drinks, etc., as it is a rather long desert drive ahead. Red Rock Canyon is 25 miles north of Mojave, and an interesting 5-10 minute stop by the side of the road. Then our usual next stop is Coso Junction which is a nice clean rest area.
The Visitors' Center at the south end of Lone Pine at Junction 395 and hwy 136 provides a good view of Mt. Whitney through their indoor picture window. Whitney sits back a little, and a small chart points out all the peaks and names.
Bishop has been covered; Bodie is 85 miles north of Bishop to the turnoff, and then it's 10 miles paved, 3 miles unpaved to Bodie. Can be very warm - bring water, plenty of walking, and the sagebrush makes one thirsty looking at it.
The South Tufa Reserve at the south end of Mono Lake, and east on hwy 120 towards Benton has the tall tower tufas, a self-guided walk, and interesting. About 5 miles from 395.
