There are two websites for train tickets in Italy. We used trenitalia for a trip in May and booked online well in advance and got the discount for 1st and 2nd premium class on 3 trips.

You do not need to use RailEurope which is a marketing arm owned by two of the European railroads.
For Italy use either the Trenitalia.com site or the Italiarail.com site.
The latter charges a small fee but some find that site easier to use than the Trenitalia site

Don't confuse Italo with Italiarail. Italo is an actual train company in Italy that runs between the major cities. Italiarail is a reseller of tickets in the US like RailEurope is a reseller.
Trenitalia and Italo are the main train companies in Italy, but there are some small private train companies in various areas such as the Circumvesuviana around Naples. Some areas are better served by bus as trains do not go everywhere. Train is not always the best option. It depends on your itinerary.

Rail Europe (.com) = French Railways subsidiary = cannot access all Trenitalia's fare range = every Trenitalia ticket full price, e.g. Milan-Rome ALWAYS the equivalent of a whopping great 86 euros. Oh, and with a booking fee added to boot!
Trenitalia.com = Trenitalia themselves = can offer Trenitalia's full fare range from full-flex 'base' down to cheap advance-purchase ('Super-Economy) = Milan-Rome starts at just 29 euros. Oh, and no fee, and print-at-home tickets, and a chance to select an exact seat from a plan.
Italiarail.com also connects to Trenitalia's system, so same prices and print at home tickets as Trenitalia, sometimes easier to understand, but adds 3.50 euros fee.

Mestre is on the mainland and S.L is Venice proper. Italo trains stop in Padua and let you book further out than Trenitalia. Here's the station/destination map. Italo does use different stations in Milan and Rome than Trenitalia.

Most of the trains that Trenitalia has between Venice S. L and Padova are regional trains so you don't want to book those online at all. Buy them there as there are more restrictions for regional tickets bought online (can only buy 7 days in advance). Regional trains have no discounts, no reserved seating and they don't sell out so no point in buying online. The tickets for this route on Trenitalia are 4.05€. I certainly wouldn't pay a 3.50€ fee to a reseller for a 4€ ticket.

One has to wonder why Man has a commercial link on his commercial site - www.seat61.com to this rip-off site???
Using www.trenitlaia.com is not easy as many flummoxed posters here say but there are always very helpful folk like kybourbon who will come to your aid if you need help.
