Eating our Way Through Boston and Providence
First of all thanks to all who responded to my questions about Boston Seafood restaurants. So here is how the trip turned out. It was a five day spring break jaunt to visit my son who recently transferred to Brown and for my history teacher husband to see some of the sites where all that good Revolution stuff went down. We arrived in Boston very late and imagine our delight to discover that the hotel we were staying at, Hotel Commonwealth, was the location of Island Creek Oyster Bar. Unfortunately at that hour they were on limited menu so we had a lovely late night dinner at Eastern Standard.
The next day we did as much of the freedom trail as our feet could handle. Unfortunately I was too busy researching this summers trip to Portugal to pay much attention to Boston plans so we messed up on planning time use well - we were particularly disappointed to find the Constitution closed on Tuesdays. On the other hand it was thrilling to be at Bunker Hill and Fanuiel Hall.
We celebrated my husband's birthday that night with my son at Deuxave down the street from our hotel. It was absolutely fabulous and fun - delicious duck and sea food and excellent wine - we were thrilled.
Also highly recommend the Hotel Commonwealth, one of the best I've stayed at.
The next day spent a delightful morning at the Isabella Stewart Gardiner Museum - reminded me of the Barnes on steroids - but great fun collection. Then a quick and easy train ride to Providence.
We stayed at the Hotel Providence which was quite nice. That was the day of the almost nor'easter and after walking around Brown in the cold and wind we were exhausted. Luckily we found a wonderful restaurant just down the street - Local 121, gourmet, creative dishes with organic fresh ingredients - a lovely dinner with my son and his roommate to be.
The next day we had a wonderful time visiting the RISD museum, surprisingly large and varied collection. I plan to go back as we definitely didn't see all there was to see. We were disappointed to find the John Brown House closed, but loved walking around Providence which is a beautiful city, and had a lovely Indian lunch on Thayer street (can't remember the name of the restaurant but friendly and delicious).
Dinner that night was at Los Andes, the hip "in" Peruvian Restaurant, very hard to get reservations and off the beaten track. It was crowded and loud, live Peruvian music which was fun, wonderful drinks, I wasn't wild about the food but the rest of our group enjoyed it thoroughly, but it was frustrating not to be able to hear each other talk.
The next morning we went back to Boston and just enjoyed walking around the commons in the rain and visiting the old graveyard where so many people of note found their rest.
Final dinner at Legal Seafood Harbourside (Thank you Fodorites) - was fantabulous, enjoyed every last bite.
Stayed at the airport Hilton the last night and was happily surprised by level of comfort and helpfulness of staff .
and now we are home in sunny and dry New Mexico. Happy travels all

laura- I'm sorry I missed your original posts for Boston info.
My nephew graduated from Boston College last May, so the October before that, my adult daughter and I went for a 4-day weekend. Had a terrific time in Boston and dinner with my nephew in the North End one night. I hope you'll go back to Boston. We will. We loved it!
Ironically, my nephew is now in graduate school at... Brown!

I'm so glad your Boston dining experience was good. I've recommended all the places you checked out...Eastern Standard, Deuxave, and Legal Harborside and they are amongst my favorites, so I'm particularly happy it worked out for you.
The Commonwealth Hotel is really nice, and quite convenient. They have 2 great restaurants and an outstanding cocktail bar on the premises.
