Knotts Berry Farm to San Diego on a Sunday
Just wanted to get the opinion of people who know the L.A./San Diego areas as far as traffic/timeframes. On the last Sunday in April (the final day of our trip), the plan is for my family to go to KBF (Knott's Berry Farm) from 10am-5pm. Since our flight out of SAN leaves at 9:45pm, I would like to return our rental car by 8pm to have plenty of time to get checked in (we'll have to check in at the counter since we won't have access to a computer/printer that day for online check-in) and go through security. My question is, barring some massive pileup or other major unexpected traffic issue, is allowing 3 hours on a Sunday reasonable for getting to SAN on time from KBF???

Unless there is a rare traffic accident southbound on the 5 or 405 - worst case probably along the Camp Pendleton part of the drive.
Check out AM 1070 for frequent traffic updates but if somebody piles up on the 5 - you could be delayed quite some time.
Moi - I would head out by 4 PM to be very safe - and relax at the airport if you get in a bit early.

It seems that 8 pm is very late to return a car to check in for a 9:45 flight - when you have to also get boarding passes, check your luggage, go through security and make your way to the gate well before the 9:15 fight closing time. (I hate being the last one on the plane since there's never any place to put your carry on and you may have to check it.)
Have you checked your airline to see what time they advise you to check in for that flight?

Good points, NY traveler, and thanks also to logandog and Tomsd for your thoughts as well. The airline's website does suggest arriving at the airport at least 90 minutes before your flight, but at least another 30 minutes is probably wise in our case since we can't do online check-in beforehand. I thought maybe lines and the counter and security might not be that busy that time of evening at 8-9pm on a Sunday...but if it is busy it could be cutting it pretty close so I will strongly consider leaving KBFV at least by 4:30.
