Rough itinerary for Chile in July/August- feedback requested
We're in the early stages of planning a 2 week trip to Chile next summer and I'd love your opinions on our itinerary. The 2 main goals are (summer for us) skiing and wine country. We are active near 40 adults who enjoy food, wine, cities, and getting outside. Our only previous experiences in S America include Argentina and Peru.

2 nights Santiago
3 nights Valle Nevado
3 nights Atacama Desert
4 nights wine country (?? Not sure where yet but I'm thinking within a reasonable drive of the Santiago airport so we can make a late night flight back to the US on the last day and also thinking of perhaps splitting our time between 2 areas/hotels)
Transportation wise I think the only intra country flight will be to Atacama; otherwise we should be able to arrange a transfer to the ski resort from Santiago and perhaps a rental car when we return from the desert for the wine country days? I'm not sure if I have the stops in the right order though...

There are shared vans up to the ski resorts run by SKITOTAL. They go up early morning and return in the afternoon. You can use them to go up one day and come down another. They also rent gear. For plenty of choice, go have a look at what they have first. There are also places which rent gear up at Valle Nevado. Their websites have more detail.
For San Pedro de Atacama, Atacama is the name of the whole vast desert, you need flights to Calama. Book those in plenty of time to get the best price. You can book a shuttle from the airport to San Pedro.
The Colchagua valley is 2.5 hours south of Santiago and offers the widest variety of lodging and some very good vineyards. Most visits are booked but your lodging can handle a lot of that for you and offer suggestions.
In Santiago, weather permitting, take one of the free walking tours (for tips).
Have one of your meals at either Bocanariz in the Lastarria neighbourhood or Baco in Providencia. Both offer a large array of very good wines by the glass and good food to accompany them. There are plenty of places to stay in both Providencia and Lastarria but you might want to be closer to the where the vans leave. They do hotel pickup anyway, but it does cost more.
