Looking into North shore, Oahu

I've been to Maui a few times and Waikiki ('76 when I was 17), which was exciting at that age and the first time there. I am now wanting to go to N.Shore, Oahu. I have been looking up places on VRBO and there are so many different areas that look very nice and seem to be on the quiet/relaxing side. That is what i am looking for (although watching some surfing would be entertaining) as it will either be me (solo) or possibly w/my husband. I NEED a vacation there, whether it's just me or someone w/me-either way, I've decided I'm going this time. I am wondering if someone has experience with many of the areas In NB and could give me some suggestions. I've looked briefly into Haleiwa, Ehukai Beach, Kawela, Sunset Beach, and others. There's alot of them that seem very nice, as well as the prices. I only need a small place, ON the beach as opposed to oceanfront. A smaller beach, as well as some snorkeling on site would be good.. (especially if solo, although some neighbors would be fine (not comf. laying out in front of many ppl) :/. i also would prefer to NOT be too out in the boonies, as I may make a couple trips to bigger town. if anyone has stayed at any of these areas I listed or others on N.Shore and would have recommendations, I would greatly appreciate any info. Looking to go in Oct or Nov, 2013,Tina

I love Haleiwa. We rented a condo at Haleiwa surf for 5 nights and really enjoyed our time there. Good swimming right in front of the condo (small beach - pretty quiet!), though I don't recall any snorkeling. The building is pretty basic (and our unit was hot - no a/c - so we dragged the mattress into the living room where there was more air flow). But I'd probably stay there again regardless - we really loved the location. Haleiwa is a great little town (cute shops/restaurants) and I'd much prefer that location over Turtle Bay for example.

Unless you stay in Haleiwa, you really can't help being out in the boonies, especially since the road along the north shore is single lane in each direction and, depending on traffic, can be very slow. I stayed for a week in Turtle Bay some years ago and would not do that again. It's a nice place but removed too far from everything.

If it were me, I'd stay along the east short somewhere and make daytrips to the north shore.

I travel solo and that's why I've always chosen to stay right in Waikiki. So I'm following this thread with interest to see what you find that suits you (and traveling alone without being on the 'boonies').

The Sunset Point area gets my vote for the most beautiful specific area of the N Shore. I can't recommend a particular rental if you want direct beachfront, as we have always had at least a short walk to get to the beach. I don't think there is really any snorkeling right in that area either.

As noted, traffic can be heavy and if your unit is close to the highway (which many are) it can be a bit noisy at night.

and you *will* be in the boonies outside of Haleiwa. The N Shore is about an hour drive to Honolulu. I don't think a week is too long to spend on the N Shore, if you want to relax and drink in the natural beauty it's great!

You might consider Ke Iki Bungalows http://www.keikibeach.com

Just fyi, Waikiki is very different now than it was in the 70s!

Thanks, I had read your post along with all the others before I wrote you and found it interesting. The thought of no A/C, since I'm super sensitive to it (and menopausing-haha), I think I'm going to need it. Also, as nice as it looks and sounds, it's too bad there's no snorkeling out front. Out of curiosity, did the whole area around there seem safe enough for a lone woman, since I may go by myself? Thanks for your response.

For myself I'd worry more about being bored out in the boonies, more than I would about safety concerns.

As long as you are doing normal things a visitors would typically do, I think all of Oahu is safe for anyone. The small amount of 'crime' you read/hear about is more things like people who leave stuff in their rental car & it gets stolen, not about personal safety.

I have to agree regarding the traffic. Haleiwa is charming and has a lot of good eats, but during the day, that one main road is a zoo. It is safe, though.

Ke Iki Bungalows is nice. If you're looking to detox and get away from it all, that area is perfect. Just remember, though, as the others said, it's out in the boonies so there isn't much out there.

Our particular unit didn't have AC in the bedroom - others may, and you can check for rentals on VRBO or Home Away.

I was traveling with my BF, but I absolutely would have felt safe to travel alone to the North Shore. I have traveled alone to HI in the past and have never been concerned.

North Shore is definitely "sleepier" than Waikiki, which is why I like it. But if you're worried about getting lonely, then Waikiki is certainly more pedestrian friendly if you don't want to get in your car every time you want to drive somewhere.
