New Year in Boston_Restaurant dinner?
We will be in Boston from the 29th Dec to 1st January, celebrating my husband's 60th birthday on the 31st. We will be staying at the Lenox Hotel in Copley Square. Can anyone suggest a good restaurant for dinner on the 31st in that area? We would prefer to walk at night to the restaurant if possible. Not over the top expensive but good food and a menu with a "Canadian flavour". Any comments on City Table restaurant at the Lenox itself? Thanks for your help. We are from Australia so I know we will be cold but are preparing for the adventure!

I don't understand what you mean by a " Canadian" flavor: maple syrup? Lobster? Mussels. Turnips? Poutine? Split yellow pea soup? Tourtière?
Funny, we have "Australian " [sic] restaurants like Outback and the possibly authentic Australian Pie Company, but I don't think I have ever heard of a Canadian restaurant.
I'll be curious to see what others ccome up with.
One of the best seafood houses in the city, Turner Fisheries, is very near your hotel, and Island Creek Oysters is a brief T ride away (2 stops). A few steps away from it is Petite Robert, an excellent French ( though not French Canadian) bistro, so you could start with oysters etc and move down the block for the rest of the meal if you can't choose.
You absolutely will need to make up your mind and book soon. Do not use open table. Do email the restaurant soon.

You might well want to consider "moving" your husband's birthday to another day.
Boston has a celebratory event called First Night on Dec 31, beginning in the afternoon and continuing through midnight. There are tons of both indoor and outdoor activities and performances, amazing ice sculptures -- a great time for everyone -- and the area around the Lenox is one of the focal points. Huge numbers of people come into Boston for the event.
All restaurants in the area are impacted. You'll need a reservation at most of them (unless you wanted to eat at 5 in the afternoon), menus at most restaurants will be special for the evening (typically, a limited number of choices available), and you'll find more of a crowded/rushed atmosphere than you'd find on any other night of the year. In short, if you want a relaxing dinner, you'd be much better off celebrating on the 30th. Besides, if you have dinner on the 30th, it will already be the 31st in Oz.

Bugaboo Creek is a Canadian-themed steakhouse restaurant chain. It is about on the same level as Outback -- not amazing, but not terrible. The walls are decorated with talking (singing?) moose heads, and show shoes. I think there are a couple in the Boston suburbs.
I agree you'd do better to celebrate First Night in the city, though.

It is unknown what form First Night will take in Boston this year - the organizers have disbanded so First Night Boston is, as we know it, no more. Mayor Menino says "the show will go on" but he will not be mayor by then and planning would have been well underway by now.

Again, why are looking for a Canadian menu in Boston? It looks like you're heading to Montreal and Quebec City after Boston so while you're in Boston I recommend trying it's specialties as mentioned above, seafood, chowders.

I think your "Canadian flavour" comment has some of us confused. If you could give us more information on type of food, we'd be able to give better help.
The big extravaganza of First Night in Boston will probably be toned down quite a bit, but will surely draw some crowds. It will be the last NYE that our mayor is in office, so I'm sure there will be some events planned.
You should make a dinner reservation for the 31st soon and maybe consider another night for the birthday dinner. Sorry I can't comment on City Table in the Lenox.

Canadian? A case of Molsons beer, a few orders of Poutine and dvd's of highlights in curling?
Haven't heard any word on this coming years first night, entertainment, ice sculptures, fireworks etc. I'll try to top it if I hear of something especially festive.
I don't think any Bostonian will be able to help you until we understand you food question.

Canadian food in Boston? What ev-ah.
I'm a Bostonian living in NYC, and stay at The Lenox all the time. Two excellent restaurants are literally across the street from the hotel on Boylston: ATLANTIC FISH, and ABE AND LOUIE'S ( amazing steakhouse!).
DON'T waste your time at CITY TABLE at the LENOX, when there are so many better restaurants right in the area and in The North End.
