DH and I have to get from Marco Polo airport, Venice to an apartment in Dorsoduro in late May. We will be dropping off a hire car at the airport on a Saturday afternoon and then need to get to the apartment. Does any one have any advice on the best way to go?
I'm thinking bus or water taxi.

Do you know the exact location in Dorsoduro? Some parts of dorsoduro are quite close to Piazzale Rome, so a lnad bus might work. for the other end of Dorsoduro, the Alilaguna to Zattere might be best.

Also wondering if you can drop the car at Piazzale Roma instead of the airport--it would make the choices simpler and quicker.

Hi ellenem, thanks for your reply. we are staying in Calle Lunga San Barnaba, Dorsoduro. We are returning the car to the airport as on a Saturday the Piazzale Roma office is not open in the afternoon. What is an inad bus?

1. Airport to Piazzale Roma by LAND bus + to Ca'Rezzonico by water bus
2.irport to Dorsodruo direct (Zattere stop) with Alilaguna Boat
3. Water taxi

Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

1. Airport - Piazzale Roma by land bus + (ACTV city bus about € 3 single ticket or ATVO more expensive about €5 or 6 but this is a coach type bus with a luggage compartiment underneath ) + waterbus to Ca' Rezzonicco stop (€7 for a single ticket. ). This requires a change from a land bus to water bus No1 but the walk to Calle Lunga is straigtforward and short. I don't rememebr if there is a bridge to cross near the stop but otherwise these is no bridge. Walking distance dependes on where exactly your are going on Calle Lunga. 200 - 300m... Bus + water bus takes about 40 minutes to 1hr.

2.Airport to Dorsoduro, direct. That's the advantage. I might do it with my usual small luggage but Calle Lunga is a bit of distance from Zattere, 800m according to google map, with corners to turn and some (about 4) bridges to cross ( = walking up and down each time). Boat ticket is €15.00. The boat takes a long 1.5hrs to sometimes close to 2 hours as it goes via Murano, Lido and San Marco.

3. Water taxi from Airport. Expesive but quick. About €110 for the boat that takes about 6 persons so depending on how many you are, worth considering.

An alternative which we have used a couple of times is the shared water taxi, offered by Venice Connected. Costs 21 euro a head. We used it when we were staying in Calle Lunga St B., and were deposited at Ca' Rezzonico - which meant that there were no bridges to cross.

Wow Peter-S-Aus! I just skimmed through your trip report. Will read it more carefully later. Thanks for all your advice. We don't know the number in Calle Lunga San Barnaba. We are renting through Views on Venice. It is a 3 bedroom apartment. We will be there for a week at the end of May and are sharing the apartment with another 2 couples from England . We are also Emirating from Australia, Sydney to be exact but I hope you won't hold that against me. We are flying into Rome and visiting cinque terre, Tuscany, lake como and Venice, spending a week in each place.

Kappa1 , thanks for the info on getting from the airport to Dorsoduro. I think we will probably do the bus and then vaporetto.

Did anyone buy a 7 day pass for the the vaporetto? Is it worth it? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The public airport bus has gone up to 6 euros...

Definitely buy the vaporetto pass if you are going to be there a week, especially if you are going to use it to get to and from Piazzale Roma.
