You will have the chance to drive the gorgeous Route des Grandes Alps, one of the greatest driving experiences on the planet.

If you have one day only (what a pity!), you can drive just a section of the mountain road. I would suggest driving from Annecy via Val d'Isere and Modane to Avignon. Total driving time will be eight hours over spectacular mountain passes with many photo stops along the way.

You can get info on drive times and distances, toll and fuel costs and suggested routes from www.viamichelin.com. The time estimates do not include stops nor do they consider bad traffic or bad weather.

Eight hours in a car is more time than I would want to spend in a day - especially with a group of 8 (not all will be able to see much out of the windows). We drove the Route des Grandes Alpes from Provence to Annecy a few years back, and it took us 4 days - seeing the sights along the way at a reasonable pace.

The "direct" autoroute is a little "grungy" south of Lyon with lots of ugly commerce & nuclear power plants. I would take the train & spend more time in Annecy and/or Provence.
