3 Week European Family Trip
Any ideas for a three week European family trip (kids will be 11 and 9) for the summer 2013?? We live in Southern California and prefer to rent a home or apartment, perhaps one or two different spots. I was thinking somewhere in Bavaria and then something coastal. We are completely open to ideas as this will be there first trip to Europe and prefer to avoid Paris, Rome... in the summer. Thank you and happy to reciprocate if anyone wants to visit California and wants some ideas.

We took our kids to England and wales for 3 weeks one year and had a blast. Besides London, which we all loved, we rented in 3 different locations for 3-4 days each and used that as our base to explore the area. We went fossil hunting in Lyme Regis, took surfing lessons in Cornwall, scrambled all over hilltop castle ruins where we were often the only people there, and biked in the countryside. We especially loved Edward's castles in north wales and Tintagel where King Arthur was "born". English history is so familiar and the chance to see literary sites (beach where Alice of wonderland fame vacationed, village where Pride and Prejudice was filed, Harry Potter sites, etc.) is great for all!

When our kids were 9 and 12 we took them on our first European trip to Italy for two weeks (Rome, Venice, Florence) and we all loved it and it started a new passion to travel with our kids. Here is a link to my blog which has my trip report and pics from that trip as well as several other trips to Europe (London/Paris, Barvaria/Prague, Barcelona). http://www.fromhometoroam.com/
Just keep in mind that summer can be hot - Bavaria will be cooler than Italy or Spain, so try to go as soon as your kids get out of school - as early in June as you can.

Coastal in summer can be uber hot and uber expensive and crowded - unless you go to the Atlantic coast of France or perhaps Belgium or Netherlands. I wouldn;t touch Spain then and we don;t do italy later than May.

Consider La Rochelle and the Ile de Ré for a coastal stay. The island has bike paths separated from general road traffic.
