where to stay overnight between Florence and Salzburg

We're in Florence, headed to the Salzburg area tomorrow. We have 1 or 2 nights between cities and are trying to decide on a good stopping/overnight point. We will probably stop in Bolzano to see the Ice Man, but aren't sure if that's the best place to stay. We have 3 kids (ages 10-14). Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks!

You have several options. Firstly, you can stay at Laka Garda, e.g. Malcesine (spectacular scenery). Secondly, you can stay in Meran (beautiful city). Thirdly, you can stay in one of the valleys around Bolzano.

We have often stayed with our kids in Hotel Adler in Sankt Ulrich/Ortisei, which offers several pools and a sauna landscape which our kids enjoyed very much. http://www.adler-dolomiti.com/en/

From there, it is an easy trip to the Ötzi musum in Bolzano.

The A27 (just north of Venice) to SS51 route up to Cortina d'Ampezzo is a beautiful drive. You can easily stay in Cortina, which is a bit touristy but probably a nicer place to stay than Bolzano. However, if you want to then go to Bolzano, it will be about two hours because, although it's not a great distance, you're on small mountain roads. However, that's also a very pretty drive. Another stopping point (south of Cortina) might be Bassano de Grappa, The town is small enough so that it can be explored in an afternoon/evening stopover and it's a very pleasant place to walk through.

If you are driving, you could stay overnight in Bolzano or Bressanone and then the next morning drive into Austria to Lienz and then north on the Grossglocknerstrasse. A spectacular drive.

If you could push as far as Lienz from Florence, all the better. Sweet town.

If you are on the train, then Villach is the obvious choice although you could probably make Innsbruck work.
