Where to stay in Amalfi Coast (September) for 8 day trip? Positano or no?
I've read the forum recommendations over and over and keep changing my mind. Please provide me with advice on where to stay in Amalfi Coast for 8 days this September. My husband and I are not going to get a car this time to Europe. I do not want to be stressed about parking and driving. Therefore, I want a hotel that is close to transportation and close to shops and restaurants. I enjoy walking, but my husband will groan a bit if it is too much walking/climbing. Our budget is $300 - $500 USD per night. We fly into Naples and I had planned to stay in Sorrento (Antiche Mura) for 4 nights so we could do Capri, Mt V and Pompei, and then had planned to stay 3 nights at Eden Roc in Positano and explore Amalfi and Ravello from there. However, I have read mixed reviews of Positano. I want a nicer romantic place for our second stop, maybe with a pool and nice room. I truly love friendly hoteliers, nice clean somewhat spacious rooms and good location.

If u want romantic definitely go for ravello d say. it's easy to get down to amalfi via a little bus that lakes very little time. Then u can enjoy amalfi and catch the bus to position for day too. Ravello to me was the most romantic and had gorgeous views and boutique and fancy ich hotels.

We loved Antiche Mura in Sorrento as a base. But, if you are having 2nd thoughts about Positano then look at this splurge option near Amalfi---they have a shuttle into town.

Ravello is too isolated for me, but I do love to visit.

You may not squeak by at the Santa Caterina given your price limit.

If not, you might want to try a hotel that is located in the town of Amalfi, within a few blocks of the shops and restaurants:

I'd have to agree with HG, though...for romance alone, Ravello is pretty divine. The Palazzo Sasso is a fabulous, glorious hotel where you might manage to get in under your limit if you take one of the least expensive rooms. No need to take a bus to get down to the coast; they have a free van that takes you to their gorgeous beach club, and will also drop you in the town of Amalfi for sightseeing. Unlike the pools of most other hotels in the area, their pool is heated.
