Going to Kyoto from Miyazaki

Hello,... help me please, I will go to Miyazaki next August for 3 weeks, during my staying in Miyazaki, I would like to visit Kyoto on week end. Could you advice me how can I travel to Kyoto? I prefer leave Miyazaki to Kyoto on Friday evening and back to Miyazaki on Sunday evening. I have tried searching transportation but I can't find (direct one). Thanks.

Check the local airlines via kayak or whoever for direct flights from KMI(Miyazaki airport) to ITM (Itami airport). Itami is right outside of Kyoto and Osaka. If you are arriving into Japan via an international airlines you probably qualify for discounted domestic air passes explained in detail here:

Or you can check the train schedules via www.hyperdia.com for JR train service between Miyazaki and Kyoto. If taking the train alternative you would probably benefit on this trip from a 7-day JR train pass explained in detail here:

Aloha!

Unfortunately August is a time when there are blackouts on the really cheap fares - you should research and book as soon as possible....

By train, it would be a 7-hour trip each way. Cost would be 28,300 yen for a 7-day JR Pass or 25,000 for the 5-day Sanyo-Shikoku-All Kyushu Pass + fare from Shin Osaka to Kyoto + fare from Kyoto to Shin Osaka.

Looks like regular air fare is in the $700 range.

An air pass might be better, but as Mara mentioned there are blackouts in August. But there is some pass availability for August, see here:
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2364.html

If you have Star Alliance frequent flier miles (e.g. on United) then you can probably get the roundtrip for only 12,000 miles, flying on ANA. If you have Oneworld FF miles, then you might be able to fly on JAL for free.

Other options are to call a Japanese travel agent, either in your home country or when you are in Japan. See if there is a reasonable air+hotel package.

Are you going to get out and about in southern Kyushu during your stay in Miyazaki? Either way, you could have a fine weekend away from Miyazaki just in southern/central Kyushu (Kumamoto, Aso, Kagoshima, Ibusuki, Takachiho, Kirishima Onsen), or further, say Nagasaki or Fukuoka or Beppu. There is probably some fun festival to go to.

If I couldn't leave for Kyoto on Friday morning then I probably wouldn't make a weekend trip there from Miyazaki.

For me, the cost in both time and money is too high for a day and a half in Kyoto, given the more easily accessible wonders of Kyushu.

But, do you have an frequent flier miles to spend? What airline/program(s)?

to: hawaiiantraveler, Mara and mrwunrfl: thank you very much, your infos help me so much... I went to Fukuoka in 2010 for short visit, and I ever visit Oita and Beppu, but no time to go to Kyoto at that time, that's why, I will try my best to see Kyoto...yes, August is not best for me, but, that's my chance! ok, I will search the transportation asap.

The first thing you ought to do is go to the link I gave and see if any of the air passes are valid on a weekend that you want to travel on.

KMI = Miyazaki Airport
OSA = Osaka, all airport
ITM = Osaka Itami Airport
KIX = Osaka Kansai Airport

ITM might be your best option for getting to Kyoto.

Looks like the latest train departure from Miyazaki would be at 5:36PM and get you into Kyoto half-past midnight. After that your next best train option would be at 6:55PM getting to Kyoto at 8:51 AM with a 6 hour connection at Hakata.

Those options use the Nozomi shinkansen. It would be cheaper to fly than pay the regular train fare for those trips.

With a 7-day JR Pass (not valid on Nozomi) your earliest arrival would be 10:07 AM. Or depart at 4:21 PM and arrive Kyoto at 9 minutes after midnight.

The Sanyo-Shikoku-All Kyushu pass would allow travel on Nozomi shinkansens. But the options that include Nozomi at the beginning of this post have the Nozomi going from Hakata or Kokura through to Kyoto. You would have to pay the fare between Shin Osaka and Kyoto. I don't know if you pay it up front and stay on the same train through to Kyoto or if you would have to get off at Shin Osaka and then get another train and ticket.

Here are the Japanese travel agents that I would contact outside of Japan:

http://his-usa.com/en/top/Top.aspx
http://online.jtbusa.com/

I doubt that you could book what you want online and maybe you are not in the USA, but you might be able to use those links for contact info for an office near you and then see what they might come up with.

mrwunrfl, thank you very much again! I will check them, I am not in USA. I think, you are right, it is very expensive to see Kyoto only a day and a half... but who knows, I got lucky.
Your advice wake me up!
thanks all.
