You don't need to stay near Wrigley but rather near the Red Line train which will take you to the game. That's a great birthday gift.

Agreed that any hotel in the River North/Magnificent Mile or Loop areas will be fine. A few more restaurants in River North and more offices in The Loop.

Catch the Red Line train along State Street toward Howard. Exit at Addison (along with about 500 of your closest friends) and walk a half-block west to Wrigley. You can see the stadium from the platform.

For restaurants, check www.chicagoreader.com or www.chicagomag.com. You can search by neighborhood, price or cuisine. Both sites also have listing of other events.

You can reach the central city from either airport via CTA trains. The Blue Line runs from The Loop to O'Hare and the Orange Line to Midway. Vending machines sell passes at both airport rail stations. A 1-day pass is $5.75 a 3-day is is $14 and they allow unlimited rides on all CTA trains and buses. For transit maps, a trip planner and how to track the next train or bus on your smart phone, check www.transitchicago.com.

Try the River Hotel. It on Wacker Drive about a block off of Michigan Ave. I found this location to be very centraly located. You are two blocks the Red Line at State/Lake. You will also be withing walking distance of the Mircale Mile. Miller's Pub on Wabash is just a few blocks away. Good food, english fare.

There are a few older threads that have many dining options.

If you'd like to walk to Wrigley, there is the Best Western Hawthorne Terrace on Broadway. It's in the East Lakeview neighborhood and the location is very accessible to Wrigley, the lakefront, and express buses to MI Ave/Loop.

As long as you are within walking distance of a red line stop, you should be fine in terms of hotels. A friend of mine recently stayed at a Hilton Suites, east of Michigan, near the Hancock that was actually amazingly pleasant. She got it through priceline, I think.

As for restaurants, if your son is a big Cubs fan, why not try Harry Caray's? The food is actually really good. Anyplace close to Wrigley Field will be packed on game days.

Harry Caray's is a good choice. Near Wrigley Goose Island is pretty good. Bernie's if you want a hot dog and beer with local Cub's fans.
