Help with Italy Itinerary for Two College Students
Need advice on an itinerary for a 14 day trip for my two college age children a boy and girl who each would like to enjoy the trip doing things they both enjoy.....sightseeing, cooking class, visiting a winery, mineral baths, relaxing. They will be landing and departing from Milan and are interested in the following cities: Milan, Venice, Bologna, Florence. I thought they should also visit such places as Verona, Padua, Lucca. For these cities does it make sense for day trips with roundtrip rail expense or should they stay at some of these smaller cities? Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

For 14 days I would have 3 or a tmost 4 hotels. Many of these smaller towns can be seen as day trips from larger places.
But - Milan seems an odd choice (mostly a business/fashion city that is not tops of the tourist trail) and unless they have already seen Rome I would consider missing it close to a crime (but my focus is history, culture and food and I prefer cities to small towns).

Starting in Milan since that is where they are flying into and my daughter is an interior/home furnishings design major but I don't think they need to be there for more than two full days.

Not considering Rome because they want to concentrate on north and central with a visit to Rome and south on the next trip. They really do not want to be running but rather immersing themselves in the cities/towns they visit.

If they're interested in mineral baths and 'relaxing,' they could do a day trip to Montecatini Terme from Florence. Other possible day trips from Florence include Lucca, Pisa, Siena, San Gimignano and Bologna. Verona and Padova are easy day trips from Venice. Some of the train fares between these towns are extremely reasonable.
You don't say when this trip is planned, but I assume summer. With only 14 days, in and out of Milan, I see no requirement to include Rome.
Considering all of the possible day trips, I suggest 4-5 days each in Venice and Florence, a day or two in Milan, and a couple of days in either Tuscany, Lake Como or wherever sounds appealing. But from your description, they seem to know what they want so unless they have specific questions I think you/we should let them figure/plan this themselves.
