I know this may not be the right forum, but I need to know an answer, and you guys seem to be very knowledgeable. on a lot of topics.

We have a GPS, which I just updated about a week or so ago, that we have been relying on for many, many trips for several years now, and it is generally right on the money or extremely close to being perfect. But this time, it is telling me that the address entered is not found. However, when I punch in the address in yahoo or google, the map comes up, and I can get directions from the airport into which we are flying and this address.

I really don't want to divulge the GPS I have because they are kind of like doctors or dentists-- most people have their pick and don't like others.

I'm just wondering-- what could be the problem?

??? That simply doesn't make sense IMO. And -- the brand of GPS might make difference.

I have had the same problem with my TomTom. The GPS still directs me to the old Indianapolis airport and not the new one. To correct this, I just log in to a nearby location such as a hotel and that will get me to the desired location. There are some GPS manufacturers that will charge you for an upgrade but I find my solution to the problem quite satisfactory.

There are many addresses that are physically located in one town but have a zip code for a different town. I see this from time to time. The online mapping programs are either smarter and can figure out these kind of hiccups or are constantly updated with info from the field. The GPS maps are much less sophisticated mapping program and database. Updating your maps (usually for a fee) may or may not fix that error.

To solve the problem you can at least get yourselves close on the GPS you can point to a nearby crossroad rather than a specific address #.

The address program for your GPS was programmed many years ago. Many things have changed over the years. If your GPS takes a SD or miniSD card buy a new updated one or just buy a a new unit with new programming.
I have always used GPSr's that you can enter specific lat/long coordinates. With WAAS technology, my handheld GPSr gets me within 20' of the geocaches I find.

JanisJ, I think it does make sense. If you tell somebody that you go to a certain doctor or dentist, it almost automatically gets a response from somebody-- either they worship the ground he/she walks on or they think he/she is a quack.

If I tell you it's a TomTom, what would your response be?
If I tell you it's a Garmin, what would your response be?

Not meaning any disrespect, but I do feel it is a valid statement. I might try what a couple of people have given me as ideas.

I'm sorry to say this, but are we now a bunch of illiterate idiots that cannot read a map or think for ourselves, that we have to have any information needed to be handed out to us, and not use our God given brains? I wouldn't own a GPS if it were given to me. I still like maps!

We are talking about GPS/SatNav -- right??? Not Neurosurgeons. I am pretty darn sure (100% sure in fact) no one on here is so devoted to one brand or another that they would think anything 'bad' about which one you own. The very idea just seems totally weird . . .

If you tell us it is a TomTom, I will tell you I have no experience with them and cannot help with particulars, but might have some general ideas about the issue. If you tell us it is a Garmin, then since I have had 2 of them, I might be able to help with some particulars.

Waldo - nice rant about GPS. It isn't like this is an either/or proposition - either use paper maps and your God given brain or you are an illiterate idiot with a GPS.
